Taco Bell Bets $5 Billion on Energy Drinks by 2030

Taco Bell’s new 120mg energy drinks are a down payment on a $5 billion beverage target by 2030, with McDonald’s already selling Red Bull.

Taco Bell launched three energy drinks nationwide this month, each with 120 milligrams of caffeine, as it chases $5 billion in yearly drink sales by 2030. The Pineapple Citrus and Strawberry Tropics refreshers cost $4.49 for 20 ounces, and a Pineapple Citrus freeze starts at $3.99.

Those cups are a mid-strength house line sitting on a menu that already sells a 200mg Rockstar drink. The money target behind them is the size of a whole restaurant chain.

Pineapple Citrus and Strawberry Tropics Go National

Nation’s Restaurant News reported the trio on August 20, with each drink carrying vitamin B as well as the 120mg caffeine dose. Quartz, citing the company on August 25, said the freeze also comes in a 20-ounce cup for $4.29, and that Chicken Enchilada Nacho Fries at $5.49 landed as a limited side item in the same window.

Foodbeast and NRN both listed the freeze at $3.99 without splitting sizes, so ticket prices will vary by store. The drinks add a third caffeine rung under the Taco Bell roof, after last year’s Agua Refrescas and the Rockstar Energy Refrescas that still appear on the live menu.

The chain has been stacking that drink business for 21 months. The dates below are the public steps that led to this week’s cups.

  1. November 2024: The first Live Más Café opens inside a Chula Vista, California, Taco Bell run by franchisee Diversified Restaurant Group.
  2. March 4, 2025: Taco Bell unveils R.I.N.G. The Bell and says beverages and the Cantina Chicken menu can each hit $5 billion in system sales by 2030.
  3. June 23, 2025: Refrescas go national, with 52mg Agua cups, 200mg Rockstar cups, and a plan for 30 more cafés in Southern California and Texas.
  4. May 2026: Cold brew arrives at Live Más Café, which TheStreet reported as the chain’s first move in that coffee format.
  5. August 2026: The 120mg energy refreshers go nationwide, a few days after McDonald’s put a Red Bull drink on U.S. menus.

Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s global chief food innovation officer, tied the 2025 Refrescas launch to a blunt ambition: the company wants to $5 billion in beverage sales by 2030 while making drinks “as iconic as its food.” The new energy line is the latest SKU on that clock, not a one-off flavor drop.

The New Drinks Sit Between Green Tea and Rockstar

Taco Bell did not wait for this week to sell a jolt. Agua Refrescas mix freeze-dried fruit and green tea for 52 milligrams of caffeine in a $3.99, 20-ounce cup, in Strawberry Passionfruit, Dragonfruit Berry and Mango Peach. The same summer 2025 launch put two Rockstar Energy Refrescas on the board at $4.49, each with 200 milligrams of caffeine plus Lion’s Mane, guarana, taurine and B vitamins, in Pineapple Lime and Tropical Punch.

The new refreshers cost the same $4.49 as those Rockstar cups and use overlapping tropical flavors, but they drop the Rockstar name and cut the caffeine to 120mg. That is a house energy drink for people who will not drink a 200mg can with lunch. The live product page still lists the Rockstar pair, so the two lines are sharing the counter for now.

Drink Size Price Caffeine
Agua Refrescas 20 oz $3.99 52 mg (green tea)
Pineapple Citrus / Strawberry Tropics Energy Refresher 20 oz $4.49 120 mg
Pineapple Citrus Energy Freeze 16 oz (20 oz also reported) $3.99 ($4.29 at 20 oz per Quartz) 120 mg
Rockstar Energy Refrescas 20 oz $4.49 200 mg
McDonald’s Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer N/A Varies 80 mg
Panera Energy Refresher (test) 20 oz N/A About 28 mg

Panera’s test, reported by Restaurant Dive, ran from October 15, 2025, through January 6, 2026, and used a much lighter dose. Foodbeast says Panera’s Energy Refreshers reached menus in March. Taco Bell’s 120mg cup is four times that test drink and half again as strong as McDonald’s Red Bull mix, while still well under its own Rockstar line. The newsroom still warns that the 200mg Rockstar cups are for adult use only and should not be stacked with other stimulants.

Thirty Cafés Are Carrying a Systemwide Plan

The drinks are the SKU. Live Más Café is the store format that has to sell them in the afternoon, when Taco Bell has historically been a lunch and late-night shop. NRN reported more than 30 cafés inside regular Taco Bell restaurants as of the energy launch, with a goal of taking the format systemwide. Taylor Montgomery, then the chief marketing officer, told investors in March 2025 that the aim is every U.S. Taco Bell.

Chris Turner, CEO of parent Yum Brands, told analysts in late 2025 that the company was “very pleased with how Live Más Café is performing” and that, if the 30-unit pilot held, Taco Bell would “lean into Live Más Café growth around the system.” He called it “one of the drivers of the long-term growth plan for Taco Bell.”

LIVE MÁS CAFÉ EARLY READS

  • Chula Vista original: NRN reported a 40% sales lift at the first café and about 300 specialty drinks a day.
  • Irvine, California: Taco Bell said that unit sold more than 900 drinks a day, with one in three tickets carrying a café-only beverage, per Restaurant Business in October 2025.
  • System cafés: TheStreet, citing Taco Bell in May 2026, said café locations sell about 25% more beverages than a standard restaurant.
  • Staffing model: “Bellristas” build more than 30 signature drinks, from Churro Chillers and specialty coffees to Dirty Mountain Dew Baja Blast Dream Sodas.

Those reads are from a tiny fleet. Yum’s second-quarter release counted 9,046 Taco Bell restaurants worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Thirty cafés is a test kitchen with a press kit, not a converted system. Cold brew only showed up at the cafés in May, so most U.S. stores still cannot sell the coffee half of the afternoon bet.

We’re seeing today that people, especially younger consumers, are reaching for refreshing drinks as part of their lifestyle, whether it’s for energy or a sweet treat throughout the day. So, we’re making big investments to become the ultimate beverage stop where our fans can expect to see the same bold, unexpected creativity in their cups as they do on their plates.

Liz Matthews, Global Chief Food Innovation Officer, Taco Bell newsroom, June 23, 2025

The company is asking franchisees to rebuild dining rooms around that line. Dedicated drink stations and open prep so guests can watch the cups get made are part of the café kit, according to Foodservice Equipment & Supplies. That is a capital ask, not a syrup change.

McDonald’s Put Red Bull on the Same Counter

McDonald’s started selling the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer nationwide on August 17, mixing Red Bull with blue raspberry syrup and freeze-dried dragonfruit. The chain’s product page lists 80 milligrams of caffeine per Energizer and 200 calories, and it sells an 8.4-ounce Red Bull can on its own at participating stores. Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald’s USA chief marketing and customer experience officer, said guests “loved” the drink in U.S. tests and that the company is “just getting started.”

CEO Chris Kempczinski told analysts the broader beverage platform was running ahead of plan in the United States, with higher checks and “new occasions” through the day, Restaurant Dive reported. A Citi survey cited on a Seeking Alpha recap of the launch found that 60% of energy drinks bought at restaurants and coffee shops were extra purchases, while 49% of respondents said a restaurant energy drink would replace one bought somewhere else. That split is why both chains are in the category: some of the cups are new money, and some are stolen from a gas-station cooler.

Taco Bell’s 120mg house drink is stronger than the McDonald’s mix and does not pay for a Red Bull logo. McDonald’s has thousands more U.S. stores and a brand people already associate with a caffeine hit. Taco Bell is selling tropical flavor and a Baja Blast halo to the same afternoon slot.

What $5 Billion Looks Like in Cups

Taco Bell ended 2024 with about $16.2 billion in U.S. sales, according to Technomic figures published by NRN. A $5 billion drink business would be about 31% of that 2024 base, and NRN noted it would sit in the same neighborhood as full system sales at Raising Cane’s, KFC or Olive Garden. In March 2025, QSR Magazine reported the chain also wants U.S. average unit volume to rise from $2.2 million to $3 million by 2030, with eight new occasions (energy drinks and coffee among them) adding about $250,000 of incremental AUV.

The chain is already moving a lot of liquid. Taco Bell told TheStreet it sold more than 950 million beverages in 2025, with drinks on nearly 60% of orders, and said 43% of specialty drink purchases were standalone rather than meal add-ons. Through August 2025 it had already sold more than 600 million drinks, up 16% from 2024, with drinks on 62% of tickets, the company said in an October statement covered by Restaurant Business.

Unit counts do not equal $5 billion. Fountain soda is cheap. The $4.49 energy cups, $3.99 Aguas and café specialties have to take share of that 950 million, and they have to pull visits at 2 p.m. that used to go to a coffee drive-thru. Yum’s second-quarter release still showed the food business humming, with 7 percent Taco Bell same-store sales growth, U.S. system sales up 9%, and company-store restaurant margins at 26.2%. Drinks are a mix-shift on top of a chain that is already growing, not a rescue plan.

Dutch Bros Already Owns the Afternoon Slot

Technomic data cited by NRN showed energy-drink menu mentions up 45.8% from the third quarter of 2020 to the third quarter of 2025, the fastest-growing slice of an already growing drink category. Across 15 QSR chains that already sell energy drinks, 5.2% of guests ordered at least one, up from 4.4% the year before. Ziggi’s Coffee, a 100-plus-unit Colorado chain, has had energy drinks on the menu since 2017 and told NRN they hold a steady 10% of sales, sometimes 15% to 20% on a hot seasonal item.

The specialist chains Taco Bell has to bump into are not sitting still.

WHO ELSE IS SELLING THE AFTERNOON BUZZ

  • Dutch Bros: Restaurant Business, using Technomic Top 500 figures, said the chain grew sales 22% and topped $2.2 billion, passing Scooter’s and Tim Hortons for the fourth-largest U.S. coffee brand after Starbucks and Dunkin’.
  • Swig: The same Top 500 rundown said the dirty-soda drive-thru grew sales 65% last year.
  • 7 Brew and Scooter’s: Both keep adding units in the same young, customizable, mostly cold drink lane Taco Bell is now describing as a lifestyle.
  • Panera: Energy Refreshers were a defensive test after QSR refreshers started showing up, Restaurant Dive wrote, because sandwich and soup shops are losing drink-only stops too.

Taco Bell’s edge is a ticket that can still hold a Crunchwrap. Dutch Bros and Swig win if the only thing in the car is a drink. The 43% standalone share on specialty beverages is the number that has to climb if Taco Bell wants coffee-shop money without coffee-shop rent.

The Drive-Thru Crowd Still Wants the Chalupa

On August 21 the official Taco Bell account announced the energy line with a joke rather than a spec sheet: “when they say get your creative juices flowing they’re talking about taco bell energy.” Replies under that post did not argue caffeine milligrams. They asked for the Naked Chicken Chalupa and made the usual bathroom jokes. The people who already talk to this brand still show up for food nostalgia. The $5 billion mix-shift has to happen in that same lane, not in a new one full of Dutch Bros regulars.

Café drinks already sit in a separate price tier. A July $1 Mexican Pizza promo that also sold $1 sodas, freezes and Refrescas carved Live Más Café drinks out of the deal, which is how a premium cup gets protected and how it stays invisible to the value customer. Four years remain until 2030. The 120mg refreshers are on the national board. The cafés that are supposed to teach America to buy afternoon caffeine with a taco still number a little more than 30.
