Patterson’s Domestic Assault Case Leaves the NFL Idle

Cordarrelle Patterson posted a $1,000 bond after a Sevierville domestic assault arrest, with the unsigned returner outside NFL roster discipline.

Sevierville police arrested Cordarrelle Patterson, 35, on a domestic assault charge at 11:11 a.m. on October 17, 2026, and booked him into the Sevier County Jail. Court records show he posted a $1,000 bond and left that night.

The former kick-return record holder has been unsigned since Pittsburgh cut him in July 2025, so the live file is a Tennessee misdemeanor case, not an NFL roster matter.

Sevierville Police Booked Him at 11:11 a.m.

The city’s public information officer said officers took Cordarrelle Ladrea Patterson into custody on Saturday morning and moved him to the county jail. The date of birth on the booking matched the University of Tennessee and NFL listings for the Rock Hill, South Carolina, native who starred in Knoxville in 2012.

He was still at an overnight rental on Rambling Creek Way with his wife and family when police arrived on a domestic-disturbance call. The warrant lists his home as Clover, South Carolina. Sevierville is a tourist city in Sevier County, and the address on the call was a short-term stay, not a listed year-round residence.

Arrest photographs later showed him in a gray T-shirt and shorts with his hands cuffed behind his back. The booking photograph shows a grin. Neither image is a verdict. They are what a misdemeanor booking looks like when the famous name no longer buys a side door.

THE OCTOBER 17 BOOKING

  1. October 17, 2026: Patterson’s wife calls 911 from an overnight rental on Rambling Creek Way after a domestic dispute.
  2. October 17, 2026: Officers find him still on the scene with his wife and their children and separate the couple.
  3. October 17, 2026, 11:11 a.m.: Sevierville police arrest him on a domestic assault charge and book him into the Sevier County Jail.
  4. October 17, 2026, night: He posts a $1,000 bond and is released, court records show.

No public statement from Patterson or a representative followed the booking. No plea has been reported. The charge is an accusation, and it has not been proved in court.

What a Tennessee Domestic Assault Charge Carries

Tennessee does not wait for a broken bone. Bruising can supply the bodily-injury element, and an officer wrote that the bruising on the wife’s left upper arm matched what she described. Grabbing hair and an arm, if a jury later accepts that account, is enough to charge domestic assault against a spouse.

Under the Tennessee domestic assault statute, a first conviction that tracks bodily-injury assault is punished as assault. That offense is a Class A misdemeanor. Jail can run as long as 11 months and 29 days, and the assault law allows a fine of up to $15,000 when the state proves bodily injury.

The Class A misdemeanor jail range is the ceiling, not a sentence already imposed. Patterson has not been convicted. A first case can still end in probation, a deferred program, a dismissal, or a trial. Repeat convictions are written to get harsher, which is why the first filing still matters even when the bond looks small.

TENNESSEE DOMESTIC ASSAULT PENALTIES

Conviction Class Jail Fine
First, causing bodily injury Class A misdemeanor Up to 11 months, 29 days Up to $15,000
Second, bodily-injury theory Misdemeanor range in the statute 30 days mandatory, up to 11 months, 29 days $350 to $3,500
Third or later, bodily-injury theory Class E felony 90 days mandatory minimum $1,100 to $5,000

A conviction can also send money to family-violence shelters, force a firearms surrender, and put the defendant in a certified batterers’ program. Bond in these cases often adds no-contact terms. Reporting on Patterson’s $1,000 bond has not listed GPS monitoring, which Tennessee reserves in a 2024 law for weapon, strangulation, and aggravated facts that this warrant, as described, does not allege.

The League’s Conduct File Stops at an Unsigned Player

The NFL’s personal conduct policy still names domestic violence as a baseline six-game unpaid suspension for people inside the league, and it does not require a criminal conviction. That machine is visible this season on rostered players. Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs missed the first six weeks of 2026 on the commissioner’s exempt list after a May arrest. Denver linebacker Jonathon Cooper came off the same list with a trial still ahead.

Patterson is not on a roster. Pittsburgh terminated the contract of Patterson on July 29, 2025, a day after he posted that the club had cut “old washed up cordarrelle patterson on his day off.” He has not signed since. The exempt list needs a club. Unpaid games need a paycheck. A team statement needs a team.

In a 2021 free-agent case, the NFL said unsigned players remain eligible to sign and that the league investigates law-enforcement incidents, with discipline if the policy is violated. That door is still there. It does not put Patterson on a weekly injury report or start a six-game clock while he sits in Clover. A club that signed him would walk into the review. Until then, Sevier County owns the calendar.

Online talk after the warrant details landed never really got to that gap. It stuck on the grin, the cuffs, and a pile of racial cracks that had nothing to do with Class A misdemeanor ranges. A domestic call in Tennessee with children in the house and visible bruising is built for an arrest. The leftover question is which system, if any, still has a hold on him after the jail door opened.

Nine Kick-Return Scores Across Six Uniforms

Patterson was the 29th pick in the 2013 draft, a one-year Tennessee Vol who put up more than 1,800 all-purpose yards in 2012. He lasted 12 NFL seasons as a receiver, a runner, and the most efficient kick-return threat of his era. The career rushing and receiving totals sit at 2,646 rushing yards and 2,875 receiving yards. The number that followed him from building to building is nine kickoff-return touchdowns, the NFL record.

One of those scores covered 109 yards against Green Bay on October 27, 2013, tying the longest play the league allows. The ninth was a 103-yard return against Chicago on November 20, 2022, in Atlanta. He went to four Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro four times, all as a returner. He won Super Bowl LIII with New England on February 3, 2019, a quiet night from scrimmage after a 38-yard opening kick return.

The Steelers signed a two-year deal with him in 2024 after Arthur Smith, his old Atlanta head coach, had moved to Pittsburgh as offensive coordinator. An ankle injury limited him to 13 games: 32 carries for 135 yards, 12 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown, and 11 kick returns for 240 yards. When the club signed him, its own release listed 7,989 kickoff-return yards; the 240 in 2024 brought that career pile to 8,229. He never found a tenth touchdown in Pittsburgh, and he never found another team after the cut.

PATTERSON’S SIX NFL STOPS

Team Years What stuck
Minnesota Vikings 2013-2016 29th overall pick; 109-yard return
Oakland Raiders 2017 One season as a returner and receiver
New England Patriots 2018 Super Bowl LIII
Chicago Bears 2019-2020 Two Pro Bowls, two first-team All-Pro nods
Atlanta Falcons 2021-2023 Ninth kick-return touchdown in 2022
Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 Final 13 games; released July 2025

On the day he announced the cut, he wrote, “Breaking news!!! Pittsburgh Steelers release old washed up cordarrelle patterson on his day off!!!” The joke was on the roster bubble. The arrest 15 months later is on a different docket.

Rambling Creek Way Was an Overnight Rental

Patterson married Taylor Quick in July 2024. They had been together since 2014 and share two sons and a daughter. The warrant says the alleged assault happened shortly before the 911 call, and that she told officers she feared for her own safety and the safety of the children.

Local papers in East Tennessee, which generally do not name domestic-assault complainants, still printed the core of the affidavit because it is a public charging document. The hair-grab and the arm-grab are the acts alleged. The bruise is what the officer said he saw. The children are why the fear language in the warrant is not a throwaway line.

WHAT THE WARRANT ALLEGES

  • The call: A woman reported an assault at the Rambling Creek Way rental, and Patterson was still there with the family when officers arrived.
  • The acts: She told police he grabbed her hair and her left upper arm during the dispute.
  • The injury: An officer wrote that he saw bruising on that arm consistent with her account.
  • The fear: She said she feared for herself and the children because of what he had done.

The victim expressed fear for her safety of herself and children as a result of the defendant’s actions.

Sevier County arrest warrant

Those sentences are the state’s opening claim, not a finding. Patterson is entitled to contest every word of them. The children, unnamed in the public file, are the hidden file whether a camera is pointed at the cuffs or not.

Bond Set at $1,000 Then the Jail Door Opened

A $1,000 bond on a Class A misdemeanor is ordinary county practice, not a hidden ruling on guilt. It got him out the same night. It did not close the case, set a trial, or start an NFL clock. It also did not require the league to send a memo, because there is no club to copy.

If he tried to sign, the 2021 league line on free agents would matter again: eligible to sign, subject to investigation, subject to discipline if the policy is breached. At 35, with no contract since July 2025 and a domestic assault case open in Sevier County, that is a hypothetical buyer’s problem. The actual next dates belong to a Tennessee courtroom that has not yet been noticed in the public reporting.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The booking: Sevierville police arrested Patterson at 11:11 a.m. on October 17, 2026, on one domestic assault charge.
  • The bond: He posted $1,000 and was released that night, according to court records.
  • The affidavit: The warrant describes a hair and left-upper-arm grab, visible bruising, and fear for the wife and their three children.
  • The employment: He last played in 2024 and has been unsigned since the Steelers’ July 2025 cut.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A plea: No guilty, not-guilty, or no-contest entry has been reported.
  • A court date: No arraignment or trial setting has appeared in the public write-ups of the file.
  • His account: Patterson has not issued a public statement on the arrest.
  • League process: No NFL club has announced a signing, and no public personal-conduct ruling exists to announce.

The photographs of the walk to the car will keep circulating because they are easy. The harder record is a spouse’s bruise, three children on a 911 call, a $1,000 bond, and a league that has no roster left to suspend.
