Charli XCX Secretly Films a Cameo in Scorsese’s Horror
Charli XCX filmed a secret cameo in Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night after putting the director on her Music, Fashion, Film album cover.
Charli XCX filmed a secret cameo in Martin Scorsese’s gothic horror What Happens at Night, joining Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The part stayed off the call sheets until October 22, when casting notes went out and reps for Charli, Scorsese, Apple, and StudioCanal gave no comment.
In July she had already used Scorsese as living cover art. On Music, Fashion, Film he sits in a kitchen with John Cale and Marc Jacobs, one man per word of the title. The director she borrowed as a symbol of cinema has now borrowed her as a walk-on.
She Put Scorsese on the Cover First
The kitchen picture was shot in April in New York by Aidan Zamiri. Cale, Jacobs, and Scorsese wear black and look into the lens; Charli is absent from the standard sleeve and present on a special-edition frame. She later said the three of them have had very different careers and are “very impactful people in my life,” and that getting them in one room “felt quite magical.”
There was talk of a video, an ode to an imprint of time and place. Next thing, I was on a flight. Ended up in a random kitchen.
John Cale, musician
Cale also said she told him she had an idea to run by him. The public got the still. The film industry, six months later, got the smaller punchline: she is in his movie, and the credit is a cameo rather than a role with a name attached.
That sequence is easy to read as a completed checklist, music then fashion then film. The heat around the news still carries leftover Brat-era weather, the kind of fame that follows her into rooms that have nothing to do with clubs. A cameo in a Scorsese hotel picture does not close the title. It just puts her in the lobby.
A Frozen Hotel Full of Peculiar Guests
The story comes from Peter Cameron’s 2020 gothic novel, published by Catapult on August 4, 2020, and later a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Patrick Marber, the writer of Closer and an Oscar nominee for Notes on a Scandal, adapted it. Apple Original Films is making the picture with StudioCanal, which took the book rights in 2023.
An unnamed American couple travel to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. The wife is sick with cancer, and her husband worries the orphanage will refuse them if her illness shows. They check into the Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, a cavernous, half-empty pile where the bar stays open and the restaurant still lays out thirteen-course dinners from another century.
THE HOTEL’S STRANGE COMPANY
- The chanteuse: Livia Pinheiro-Rima, an old, flamboyant lounge singer who latches onto the couple like a meddling spirit.
- The businessman: Henk Bosma, a traveling guest whose appetites run past good manners.
- The healer: Brother Emmanuel, a local faith healer who draws pilgrims as surely as the orphanage does, a part reported for Mads Mikkelsen.
- The bar: a low, red-lit room that pours lichen schnapps with a silvery blue glow, staffed by a bartender who does not explain the house rules.
Nothing in that frozen town is as it seems, and the longer the couple stay, the less they know about the marriage they brought with them. DiCaprio and Lawrence play the couple. Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, and Welker White round out the company Scorsese had already named before Charli’s cameo surfaced. White has been in his films since Goodfellas.
The Czech Cameras Stopped in April
The cameo leak arrived long after the European cameras had packed up. The Czech Film Commission logged 28 filming days across Prague and Bohemia between February 27 and April 9, with Stillking Films as the local production company.
HOW THE PICTURE GOT ON ITS FEET
- 2023: StudioCanal buys the novel and puts Scorsese on as a producer, with Marber on the script.
- September 18, 2025: Scorsese commits to direct. DiCaprio and Lawrence sign on as the couple, and Apple moves in to finance with StudioCanal.
- February 27, 2026: Filming starts in the Czech Republic, including Prague’s Hotel Evropa, the old Grand Hotel Europa on Wenceslas Square, plus Úštěk, Žatec, Ratboř, and a string of smaller towns.
- March 19, 2026: Apple Original Films says principal photography in the Czech Republic is underway and releases a first look at DiCaprio and Lawrence, photographed by Niko Tavernise.
- April 9, 2026: The Czech shoot ends after those 28 filming days. The same month, Charli photographs Scorsese in a New York kitchen for the album.
- July 21 and 24, 2026: Camera comes out, then Music, Fashion, Film.
- October 22, 2026: The cameo is reported as already filmed in secret.
No release date has been set. The gap between the last Czech shooting day and the leak is the tell: she was not added as a future booking on an open movie. The appearance was already in the footage when the album cycle was still selling Scorsese as a still photograph.
What Role Does Charli XCX Play in What Happens at Night?
Nobody with the pages has said. The notes that went out on October 22 called it a cameo, not a speaking lead, and stopped there. That is the whole official shape of her part.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The credit size: She has a cameo, not a billed lead beside DiCaprio and Lawrence.
- The shoot status: The appearance was filmed in secret before the October 22 leak.
- The company: Apple Studios and StudioCanal are producing, with Scorsese producing through Sikelia, DiCaprio through Appian Way, and Lawrence through Excellent Cadaver.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The character: No name, no scene, no confirmation she is even a hotel guest on camera.
- The date: Apple has not said when the film will play theaters or its service.
- The studio line: Reps for Charli, Scorsese, Apple, and StudioCanal did not comment when the cameo broke.
Cameron already wrote a singer into that hotel, Livia Pinheiro-Rima, an aged chanteuse who steers the couple off their path. No published cast list puts Charli in that part, and the book’s Livia is an old woman. Treating the cameo as a pop-star lounge number is fan casting, not reporting.
The Other Films She Shot in 2026
The Scorsese walk-on lands on a year she had already spent in front of other cameras. Camera, the fourth single from the album, is the record of that itch, and the 2026 titles sit beside it as proof she did not wait for a legendary director to start.
CHARLI XCX ON SCREEN IN 2026
| Film | Who directed | Her part |
|---|---|---|
| The Moment | Aidan Zamiri | Herself, with a story credit, in a mock documentary of the Brat stretch |
| I Want Your Sex | Gregg Araki | A role in Araki’s film |
| The Gallerist | Cathy Yan | A role in Yan’s film |
| Faces of Death | Unstated in the casting notes | A horror credit ahead of the Scorsese cameo |
In 2025 she also appeared in Julia Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero. She wrote music for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, including the Cale duet House, and co-wrote for A24’s Mother Mary. An untitled Takashi Miike picture has been listed ahead of her as well. The Scorsese cameo is the prestige stamp on a pile of work, not the first time she walked onto a set.
A Seventh DiCaprio Film, This Time a Ghost Story
For Scorsese the film is the first narrative feature since 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon, another Apple job with DiCaprio. Flower Moon took 10 Academy Award nominations. What Happens at Night is their seventh film together, after Gangs of New York in 2002, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Flower Moon. It is the first time he has directed Jennifer Lawrence.
THE APPLE AND CANAL STACK
- Seventh pairing: DiCaprio and Scorsese, with Shutter Island the closest cousin in tone, a closed world and a mind under weather.
- Ten nominations: Flower Moon, the last time this director, this actor, and Apple built a film together.
- Twenty-eight days: the Czech shoot, a short European leg for a director whose last pictures ran much longer.
- No date: Apple has the movie and has not said when anyone can see it.
Apple has a first-look deal with Sikelia and with DiCaprio’s Appian Way, which is why the ghost story landed where Flower Moon did. StudioCanal still holds the book. Daniel Lupi produces with the two stars and the director. Executive producers include Lisa Frechette and Marianne Bower for Sikelia, Jennifer Davisson for Appian Way, Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver, and Anna Marsh, Shana Eddy Grouf, and Aaron Ensweiler for StudioCanal.
Trades have called the movie gothic psychological horror, a ghost story, and a dream-like fable. Apple’s own line is drier: a married American couple, a small snowy town, a baby. The unease sits in Cameron’s hotel, in the healer and the singer and the businessman, and in a marriage that frays in the cold. Charli, whatever her few shots are, walks into that weather as a famous face the film does not have to explain.
She Already Asked If the Camera Was Stupid
On Camera, released July 21, she puts the dare in plain English. “Do I wanna make music? Am I being fuckin’ stupid / If I try to be a girl on the screen when I’m turning thirty-four?” The chorus shrugs and stays anyway: all she knows is how it feels “when the camera’s on.” Later she sings that she can be anything she wants, that she does not feel embarrassed even if she sucks, and that she is “always craving an experience that feels dangerous.”
She told Nicky Reardon the song is about a field she is drawn to and will keep exploring. To British Vogue she added the other half of the bet: maybe she falls on her face, maybe she does something powerful, and if she never tries she never knows. The Scorsese cameo is that bet in a single unbilled loop of film. It is also a small part in a movie whose supporting souls are already written as odd guests in a dying hotel.
She wraps the North American leg of the Music, Fashion, Film tour on October 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The cameo is already shot. The next time a camera points at her that night, it will be a concert, not a snowbound lobby, and the lyric’s question will still be hanging over a credit she cannot yet describe.
