Josh Duhamel’s No. 1 Rank Did Not Save Ransom Canyon
Josh Duhamel thought a two-week No. 1 run made Ransom Canyon safe. Netflix’s own weekly chart never ranked it first, and Season 2 still fell 43%.
Josh Duhamel said on October 19 he was surprised Netflix canceled Ransom Canyon, because he thought a No. 1 run had made the Western safe. The 53-year-old, who played rancher Staten Kirkland opposite Minka Kelly, was promoting a shoe deal when he finally answered the September cut.
He told the interviewer he was “pretty surprised, if I’m being honest,” and that “the show was No. 1 for almost two weeks and the numbers looked really, really good.” Netflix’s own weekly Global Top 10 never ranked it first. Season 2 also opened 43% below Season 1, then left that list a week sooner.
The No. 1 Rank He Thought Would Save It
Duhamel’s safety case was a chart placement. On the public weekly Global Top 10, which Netflix posts in hours viewed and in views (hours divided by runtime), Ransom Canyon peaked at No. 2 in both seasons. Season 1 held that slot for its first two weeks after the April 17, 2025 premiere. Season 2, which arrived on July 23, 2026, opened at No. 3 and only reached No. 2 in its second week.
The No. 1 he is remembering lived on a different board. Daily country charts had Season 2 at No. 1 in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada over its opening weekend, before it slipped to No. 2 in the US and Canada. Denmark held it at No. 1 for three days. Latin America and Asia never gave it that kind of heat, which is how a show can feel like a smash in Texas and still look soft on a global ranking.
Netflix’s fan site later said Season 1 spent four weeks on the Global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 in 77 countries. Season 2 made country Top 10 lists in 56 territories and lasted three weeks on the global chart, plus a one-week bounce for Season 1 when the new episodes landed.
SEASON 1 VS SEASON 2 ON THE GLOBAL TOP 10
| Season | Premiere | Opening-week views | Opening rank | Weeks on the list | Peak rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 (10 episodes) | April 17, 2025 | 7.2 million | 2 | 4, plus a later re-entry week | 2 |
| Season 2 (8 episodes) | July 23, 2026 | 4.1 million | 3 | 3 | 2 |
Those opening-week views are not the same number as Netflix’s half-year engagement filing. In the January-June 2025 report, Season 1 totaled 29 million views and 228.9 million hours, good for 28th among titles Netflix disclosed for that stretch. That is a solid first season. It is not the kind of chart monopoly that locks in a third.
Season 2 Opened 43% Softer
The drop is starker in hours than in views, because Season 2 was shorter. Season 1 ran 8 hours across 10 episodes. Season 2 ran 6 hours 9 minutes across 8, which should have made views easier to post, since a view is hours watched divided by runtime. It still opened with 25.5 million hours against Season 1’s 56.6 million, a 54% fall in hours and the 43% fall in views.
Week two of Season 2 did what returning Netflix shows often do: it rose 33% to 5.5 million views and hit No. 2 on the English TV list. It was still a distant second that week to The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare, which led English TV with 18.2 million views. Week three fell 50% in hours, to 16.8 million, and the title dropped to No. 5, then off the global list.
Some of the same people who binged Season 1 as comfort TV bounced off Season 2’s messier pairings, including Quinn’s engagement to a New York musician and the wider tangle of who was sleeping with whom. Duhamel is still talking about an audience that “really did love the show.” A slice of that audience did not love the second round the same way, and Netflix’s chart recorded the shrug.
Why Netflix Cut Ransom Canyon Anyway?
Netflix told the production in September it would not order Season 3. The notice landed on September 10, 49 days after Season 2 dropped, and it surprised the lead even though the show had already lived on borrowed time. After a first season that was respectable rather than huge, the streamer waited until June 2025, more than two months after premiere, to renew, then cut the episode order and shook up the supporting cast.
People inside the company liked the Season 2 reset more than the ratings did. The finale put Staten and Quinn back together, which at least spared fans a Season 1-style split, and it parked a larger role for Steve Howey’s Levi and a possible love triangle for Marianly Tejada’s Ellie. None of that offset the cost of two marquee names on a ranch show that had already been on the bubble.
THE BUSINESS CASE AGAINST A THIRD SEASON
- The wait: Season 2 was picked up more than two months after Season 1, a slow yes for a title Netflix was already weighing.
- The cut: The order dropped from 10 episodes to 8 before a single new hour aired.
- The stay: Season 2 left the Global Top 10 after three weeks, one week fewer than Season 1’s original run.
- The leads: Renewal math for a Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly ranch drama is harsher than it is for a cheaper ensemble.
Duhamel did not pretend he sets the budget. He said he was “a little upset with Netflix for not giving the audience another season, because people really did love the show … but that’s the business.” He added that the company has “their reasons for why things stay and why things go,” and that it is “not my job to question.”
Other Shows Survived Even Steeper Drops
A 43% sophomore opening is not an automatic death sentence on this platform. Several 2026 returnees posted the same slide, or a worse one, and still got another season, some of them before their second batches even launched. Ransom Canyon got the opposite call, which is why the No. 1 memory stings.
SOPHOMORE OPENING DROPS AND WHAT NETFLIX DID
| Series | Season 2 opening change | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ransom Canyon | 43% down | Canceled after two seasons |
| Running Point | 43% down | Renewed for Season 3 |
| The Gentlemen | 45% down | Renewed (before Season 2 aired) |
| The Four Seasons | 63% down | Renewed for Season 3 |
| Avatar: The Last Airbender | 59% down | Renewed (before Season 2 aired) |
| A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder | 76% down | Renewed (before Season 2 aired) |
| FUBAR | About 76% down | Canceled after two seasons |
The shows that lived were already treated as franchises, or they cost less to keep in the air. The ones that died, FUBAR among them, showed the same pattern as Ransom Canyon: a loud first season, a much quieter second, and a bill that no longer matched the hours. Netflix also pulled The Abandons, its other recent Western, after one season, so the ranch lane itself was not a protected class.
April Blair Was Already Writing Season 3
The cancellation did not catch the writers idle. Showrunner April Blair, who created the series from Jodi Thomas’s novels, said in July she was “halfway through the season 3 writers’ room.” Season 1 and Season 2, she said, had been pitched as the stretch in which Staten and Quinn choose each other. Season 3 was meant to be the work of staying chosen.
Being halfway through the season 3 writers’ room, I can tell you there are many, many more obstacles to come because I think we pitched it to Netflix as season 1 and season 2 are about their journey to choose each other. But once you choose someone and you really begin a relationship, that’s where the real work begins. That’s where you uncover people’s dirty little secrets and people’s things they don’t tell. All of the challenges, even the silly stuff.
April Blair, Ransom Canyon showrunner, July 2026
Blair had already named Staten and Quinn as “the true north of our series” and said she did not plan to keep splitting them up. Survivor’s guilt on Staten’s side, and secrets on Quinn’s, were on the board. None of that room will be shot. The novels, though, still run ahead of the show: there are 11 books in the Ransom Canyon series, from the 2015 opener through the 2025 prequel Silverleaf Rapids, and listening to the first book jumped 254% on Spotify in the two weeks after the TV premiere.
FROM PREMIERE TO THE LEAD’S REPLY
- April 17, 2025: Season 1, 10 episodes, lands on Netflix.
- June 2025: Netflix renews for eight Season 2 episodes after a two-month pause.
- November 3, 2025: Production is underway in New Mexico, with Blair back in the saddle.
- July 23, 2026: Season 2 premieres; Blair is already mid-room on Season 3.
- September 10, 2026: Netflix opts not to proceed with a third season.
- October 19, 2026: Duhamel says he thought a No. 1 run had made the show safe.
Netflix still offers cast pages and extra scenes for both seasons, including a deleted beat of Staten delivering a calf. The title page lists two seasons, TV-MA, and no further order.
He Would Rather Play a Cowboy
Duhamel’s attachment to Staten was not a press-tour line. He took the job while living at a lakeside cabin on 26 acres in Minnesota, a property he bought 16 years ago, after selling his Los Angeles house and spending more of his time on ranch-style work. “I was already in that mindset, and I kind of lived that life anyway,” he said. “So there’s something about it, I just really felt comfortable in that role.”
So the answer is yes, I would love to do more stuff like that. There’s a couple of things in the works that I may do, but those are too far off to talk about yet. But I’d much rather play a cowboy than a defense attorney.
Josh Duhamel, actor, interview on October 19, 2026
He said he feels bad for the fans who stayed invested, and that he has “just gotta move on.” The chart he trusted was real in the countries that loved the show. It was never the chart that buys another season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where Was Ransom Canyon Filmed, and Is the Town Real?
The town is fictional Texas Hill Country from Jodi Thomas’s novels. Season 2 was shot in New Mexico, which Netflix’s own production notes flagged when cameras rolled in November 2025, so the crimson mesas on screen are not a Hill Country location scout.
What Is Ransom Canyon Rated, and How Long Is Each Season?
Netflix rates the series TV-MA. Season 1 is 10 episodes running 8 hours in all; Season 2 is 8 episodes running 6 hours 9 minutes, a shorter season that should have helped its view totals and did not.
Who Created Ransom Canyon, and Who Else Starred?
April Blair created and ran the series. Duhamel and Kelly were executive producers as well as co-leads, with Season 1 also featuring James Brolin, Garrett Wareing, Lizzy Greene, Marianly Tejada, Andrew Liner, and Jack Schumacher; Patricia Clarkson and Steve Howey joined in Season 2.
Did Ransom Canyon Season 2 End on a Cliffhanger?
Staten and Quinn were back together in the finale, unlike the Season 1 split. Threads left hanging included a possible love triangle for Ellie and a larger role for Staten’s half-brother Levi, who appeared in only one scene.
How Many Ransom Canyon Books Are There?
Jodi Thomas’s series runs 11 works, including the 2015 novel that shares the show’s name, the Winter’s Camp prequel, holiday shorts, and Silverleaf Rapids in 2025, which returns to the early history of the Double K Ranch; most entries can be read as standalones in a shared town.
