Denza Comes to India After Mercedes Walked Away

BYD has teased Denza for India at about Rs 80 lakh and above, a Mercedes-born luxury badge now fully Chinese, with models and stores still unofficial.

BYD confirmed in early October 2026 that Denza, the luxury brand Mercedes-Benz once co-owned, is coming to India. A short social post, shared with BYD India, showed the blue-and-silver hourglass logo and the words “Arriving Soon,” plus a line promising a “sophisticated, high-performance EV experience.”

That is the entire official announcement. No cars, no prices, no shops, no date. Trade reports since mid-September have filled the gap with two names, the Z9 GT shooting brake and the D9 luxury MPV, both as fully built electric imports sitting at about Rs 80 lakh and above.

A Logo Teases India, Not a Price List

Denza will sit above every BYD car already on sale here. The present passenger range runs from the Atto 3 at Rs 24.99 lakh to the Seal Performance at Rs 56.82 lakh, so the new badge is being asked to start where BYD itself stops.

BYD India said in July 2026 that it had 48 showrooms across 40 cities and more than 14,000 customers, after investing more than $200 million. That network is the one on BYD’s own India dealer locator. Denza is not supposed to use it. Early reports say the luxury cars will get exclusive stores, starting in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, so a buyer paying German-luxury money does not walk into an Atto 3 showroom.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The teaser: Denza’s India handle posted Arriving Soon with BYD India in early October 2026 and used the hourglass logo.
  • The price band: The brand is being placed at about Rs 80 lakh and above, with BYD keeping the Rs 20 lakh to Rs 80 lakh space.
  • The ownership: BYD is the sole shareholder. Mercedes-Benz has no stake and says current Denza cars carry no Mercedes hardware.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The nameplates: The Z9 GT and D9 are the two cars named in trade reports. BYD has not confirmed either model for India.
  • The prices: About Rs 80 lakh for the D9 and Rs 1.2 to 1.5 crore for the Z9 GT are estimates, not a company list.
  • The calendar: End-2026 and November 2026 have both been floated. There is no official launch window.

Until those three blanks close, the India story is a badge and a promise. The rest is a plan other people are describing.

Mercedes Sold the Last Stake in 2024

Denza began in 2010 as a 50-50 joint venture between BYD and Daimler, later Mercedes-Benz Group. The name itself was a mash-up, the D from BYD and the last three letters of Benz. Early cars sold poorly. From launch through the end of 2021 the venture moved just 23,000 cars, and Mercedes spent those years backing away from a brand it had helped invent.

BYD raised its holding to 90 percent in 2022 and rebuilt Denza as a high-end line. Sales recovered. The brand delivered about 128,000 vehicles in 2023 and had passed 200,000 in total by late 2024. Chinese company records then showed Mercedes off the shareholder list on 14 September 2024, with BYD as the only owner.

THE DENZA OWNERSHIP TRAIL

  1. 2010: BYD and Daimler form a 50-50 joint venture that becomes Denza.
  2. 2022: BYD lifts its stake to 90 percent and repositions the brand upmarket.
  3. 14 September 2024: Chinese records list BYD as sole shareholder after Mercedes sells the last 10 percent.
  4. Early October 2026: A Denza India social post teases Arriving Soon with no models attached.

A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson put the engineering break in plain words at the time of the exit.

This means that Mercedes-Benz no longer holds any shares in Denza and BYD is the sole shareholder. Even the current Denza models do not include any Mercedes-Benz technology.

That quote is the trap waiting in Indian showrooms. Denza still carries a founding story that sounds German. The cars that would actually arrive are BYD products on BYD platforms, sold at prices that sit next to Mercedes EVs Mercedes still does sell here.

Still No Date for the Z9 GT or D9

Mid-September trade reports said both India cars would come as completely built-up electric models, not plug-in hybrids, and not assembled here. The Z9 GT is the loud one. The D9 is the volume bet.

The Z9 GT is a four-door shooting brake, about 2.9 tonnes, with one motor at the front and two at the rear. Combined output is 1,156 hp and 1,210 Nm, with a claimed 0-100 kph time of 2.7 seconds and a 270 kph top speed. A 122.5 kWh blade pack is rated at 600 km on the WLTP cycle. Peak charging is 1,500 kW, with 10 to 70 percent in 5 minutes and 10 to 97 percent in 9 minutes. Denza’s French product page lists a Smart Crab Walk and Compass U-Turn among the tri-motor tricks, the sideways shuffle and on-the-spot spin that already travel as clips. India estimates put it at Rs 1.2 to 1.5 crore.

The D9 is a seven-seat MPV in a 2+2+3 layout, front-wheel drive in the India brief, with 313 hp and 360 Nm from a 103 kWh pack and a 520 km WLTP claim. DC charging peaks at 200 kW. Second-row captain’s chairs get heat, ventilation, massage, fold-out tables and extendable leg rests. The European D9 page promises zero-gravity seats with 16-point massage and 14-way adjustment. The working India figure is about Rs 80 lakh, above the MG M9 and below the Toyota Vellfire.

THE TWO CARS TRADE REPORTS NAME

Model Body Power WLTP range Expected India price
Z9 GT Electric shooting brake 1,156 hp 600 km Rs 1.2 to 1.5 crore
D9 Electric seven-seat MPV 313 hp 520 km About Rs 80 lakh

Those prices are not a rate card. They are the band people around the plan keep repeating, and they only make sense against what India already sells for that money.

What the Rs 80 Lakh Band Already Sells

A Denza store in Mumbai or Gurugram would not be inventing a segment. It would be walking into one that already has German electric SUVs, a Chinese electric MPV, and Toyota’s chauffeur hybrid.

THE PRICE BAND DENZA WOULD ENTER

  • MG M9: Rs 70.90 lakh for the electric Presidential Limo, the closest electric MPV already on sale.
  • Toyota Vellfire: Rs 1.20 crore for the Hi and Rs 1.30 crore for the VIP Executive Lounge, both petrol hybrids.
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV: Rs 1.33 crore to Rs 1.48 crore, the electric Mercedes that remains after the brand cut smaller EVs here.
  • BMW iX: About Rs 1.40 crore, the other German electric SUV in the same neighbourhood.

Mercedes has already discontinued the EQA, EQB, EQE sedan and EQE SUV in India and pulled the EV offer back onto the EQS twins. The company that walked out of Denza is, in this market, selling fewer electric nameplates than it did a couple of years ago. Denza would arrive in that thinner field with a 1,156 hp shooting brake that has no direct rival except a Porsche Taycan, and an MPV aimed at a luxury people-carrier niche still measured in a few thousand cars a year.

The D9 is the car that has to earn the dealer rent. The Z9 GT is the car that gets the camera. Crab-walk footage is easy to like. Paying Vellfire money for a new badge with no Mercedes parts in it is a different decision, and it will be made in a rear seat, not on a phone.

Press Note 3 Forces a Fully Built Import Plan

The CBU route is not a styling choice. Since government-route approval for border-country FDI took effect under Press Note 3 on 17 April 2020, an investor from a country that shares a land border with India needs the Centre’s nod. A later government note added that those files also need security clearance from the Home Ministry.

BYD already builds passenger EVs in Tamil Nadu on a small knocked-down line. A proposed $1 billion scale-up with a local partner has been slowed by that same approval path. Until a larger factory is cleared, a Rs 80 lakh Denza has to arrive whole, which means import duty sits inside the sticker and volumes stay tiny on purpose.

Exclusive stores in two city-regions fit that box. They also create a second problem. BYD’s 48 showrooms are the only Indian service net the group can point to today. A Denza buyer in the first year will be asking whether the new store can actually fix a 1,500 kW charging stack and a tri-motor chassis, or whether the car will spend its life on a truck back to a BYD workshop that was built for an Atto 3.

June Was Denza’s First 20,000-Car Month

At home, Denza is no longer the weak JV Mercedes left. BYD’s June 2026 figures put the brand at 20,352 cars, the first month above 20,000. The D9 still did the heavy lifting at 8,253. The Z9 family, including the GT, added 6,445. That is a real luxury line, not a concept garage.

DENZA IN JUNE 2026

  • Brand total: 20,352 cars, the first month above 20,000.
  • D9: 8,253, still the main seller.
  • Z9 including GT: 6,445, the performance family India keeps hearing about.

Europe already has a price list that shows where BYD wants the badge to live. In the UK the Z9 GT EV is from £105,000, with a Super DM plug-in hybrid later from £95,000. In France the plug-in hybrid is €101,000 and the EV is €115,000. Those are Panamera-adjacent numbers with a Taycan-shaped wagon and no options list, which is how Denza is selling the car in the West: one loaded spec, a lot of motors, a short charge stop.

India would be asked to pay in that spirit without that dealer depth. The global product is not a rumour. The India retail machine still is.

India Still Has to Want the Badge

BYD has done the first part. It owns Denza outright, it has a shooting brake that can turn on the spot, and it has an MPV that already outsells the rest of the line in China. The teaser puts the hourglass on an Indian timeline.

The part that does not ship in a crate is the star people think they are buying. Mercedes said the current cars have none of its technology. The stores will not be BYD’s. The cars will not be built here. A buyer who can write a Rs 80 lakh cheque already has an MG M9, a Vellfire, an EQS SUV and an iX to sit in this month.

Exclusive Denza outlets in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai are the plan on the table. The logo is already here. The launch is still a date and two nameplates short.
