HBO Hands the Archer Trio Another Two-Season Run

HBO ordered two seasons of Merrick & Treves from the Archer trio, repeating their Frisky Dingo start on a network that last aired original adult animation in 2018.

HBO ordered two seasons of Merrick & Treves on October 13, 2026, a half-hour animated comedy from Archer’s Adam Reed, Casey Willis, and Lucky Yates. The pickup is for HBO itself, not a trial run on the sister streamer, and it is the network’s first original adult cartoon since Animals ended in 2018.

The logline plants the trio in Queen Victoria’s fictional Royal Temporal Constabulary, chasing Jack the Ripper through time. The title uses two people who actually lived in Whitechapel while those murders were happening. Two seasons is also how this group’s last new world began.

HBO Wants This One on HBO, Not Max

Warner Bros. Discovery’s press room listed the series under HBO, and Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO programming and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy series, said it would go to HBO audiences. That split matters inside the company. Adult cartoons such as Harley Quinn and Ten Year Old Tom have lived on Max. The last original animated comedy on HBO proper was Animals, created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano, which ran three seasons and left in 2018.

Gravitt called Reed, Willis, and Yates “exceptional comedic talents whom we have admired for years” and said the show was “wholly original.” The co-creators answered in a joint note that sounded like one of their own characters walking into a nicer office than expected.

The three of us are beyond excited to have found a home for Merrick & Treves at HBO. We can’t wait to start working with the creative team behind so many of our favorite shows. It’s actually quite daunting, now that we think about it. Like, holy shit, y’all. HBO.

A two-season buy before a frame of animation exists is a world order, not a pilot test. Animation is slow and expensive, so the extra season gives a writing staff a horizon. It also tells anyone watching the HBO brand that the network is willing to put adult drawing back on the channel that still carries the name.

The Title Names Two People Who Lived in Whitechapel

Joseph Carey Merrick, billed in his lifetime as the Elephant Man, was born on August 5, 1862, in Leicester. Surgeon Sir Frederick Treves first examined him in 1884 after a colleague spotted him in a shop on Whitechapel Road, across from the London Hospital. From about 1886 until his death, Merrick lived at the London Hospital in Whitechapel, in rooms arranged by Treves and paid for after a public appeal.

He died there on April 11, 1890, at 27. The official cause was asphyxia. Treves, who did the postmortem, concluded that Merrick had died of a dislocated neck after trying to sleep lying down, which the weight of his head had never allowed.

The canonical Whitechapel murders attributed to Jack the Ripper took place in 1888, in the same district, while Merrick was in that hospital and Treves was on staff. Queen Victoria was on the throne. The Royal Temporal Constabulary is invented. The names on the series are not.

WHITECHAPEL, 1884 TO 1890

  1. 1884: Treves examines Merrick in a shop on Whitechapel Road and presents him to the Pathological Society of London.
  2. About 1886: Merrick is given rooms at the London Hospital, where Treves visits him daily.
  3. 1888: The Whitechapel murders run through the same neighborhood.
  4. April 11, 1890: Merrick dies in the hospital at 27.

HBO has not said that the cartoon Merrick and Treves are those men in any strict biographical sense. The logline only promises “a team of unlikely heroes.” Using those names still drops a disabled Victorian patient and his surgeon into a time-travel workplace, which is a sharper choice than a pair of invented cop surnames. The show will have to decide whether they are jokes, partners, or both.

Two Seasons Is How This Trio Always Starts

Reed and Matt Thompson created Frisky Dingo for Adult Swim after Sealab 2021. Willis composed for it and voiced parts. Yates voiced the Xtacles, a squad of expendable mercenaries. The show ran two seasons and 25 episodes, from October 15, 2006, to March 23, 2008. A third season was talked about and dropped.

Reed started Archer after that cancellation, working up the spy comedy on a trip through Spain. FX first ordered six episodes. The series grew into 14 seasons and 145 episodes, airing from September 17, 2009, to December 17, 2023, first on FX and later on FXX. Reed created it, wrote the early years, voiced Ray Gillette, and served as an executive producer. Willis was an executive producer for the run and took on more of the show as Reed stepped back from writing every episode after season 10. Yates was Dr. Algernop Krieger, the house scientist with no regard for his test subjects.

THE TRIO’S THREE SHOWS

Series Home Seasons Run
Frisky Dingo Adult Swim 2 (25 episodes) 2006 to 2008
Archer FX / FXX 14 (145 episodes) 2009 to 2023
Merrick & Treves HBO 2 ordered Not set

The new HBO number matches Frisky Dingo’s entire life, not Archer’s. That is the honest scale of a first order. Archer only became a long franchise after FX let the workplace sitcoms inside a spy parody keep compounding. Merrick & Treves will need a room as sticky as ISIS if it wants more than the two seasons already on the books.

Animals Opened With a Two-Season Order Too

HBO’s last original animated comedy began the same way. In May 2015 the network picked up Animals with a two-season order after Matarese and Luciano screened early episodes at Sundance. The series premiered on February 5, 2016, added a third season, and ended on October 5, 2018, after 30 episodes. HBO canceled it that October. Season 3 averaged 185,000 same-day viewers.

Eight years separate that finale from this week’s order. In between, HBO’s own animation history stayed thin: The Ricky Gervais Show and The Life & Times of Tim belong to an earlier stretch, and the louder adult cartoons in the company sat on Max. Merrick & Treves is the first time since Animals that HBO has put a new drawn comedy on the mothership and paid for two seasons before anyone has seen a cut.

Animals proved the two-season opening is not a promise of a long run. It is a production plan. HBO can still walk away after the second batch, as it did then. The Archer team already knows both outcomes. One of their shows stopped at two. The other ran until the network cut it off.

The Archer Shop Without Sterling Archer

Archer ended in a hurry. Season 14 began on August 30, 2023. FX then announced Archer: Into the Cold, a three-part series finale that aired on December 17, 2023. That night Willis confirmed the show had been canceled. Plans had been in place for two further seasons. He said they “did not have a good handle on how we should go out” and “did not have that much time to figure it out.” Into the Cold was produced after season 14 had already wrapped.

HBO has now handed the same three people two seasons of a different title. Thompson, Reed’s partner on Frisky Dingo and an Archer executive producer, is not on the Merrick & Treves release. Floyd County Productions, the Atlanta studio that drew Archer, is not on it either. The new series comes from TFC Productions, the production arm of TFC Management.

Joel Begleiter will executive produce, with Kelly Wu as co-executive producer. Begleiter joined TFC at the end of 2024 after years as a television literary agent. While at UTA he helped package Archer and Rick and Morty. Wu has run TFC Productions since 2023. The company’s own TFC Productions with Joel Begleiter listing puts adult animation inside his brief. The manager who once sold Archer is now a producer on the show that has to live without Sterling, Lana, and Krieger’s lab.

That is the creative risk hiding under the reunion headline. Reed’s voice, Willis’s later-season control, and Yates’s performer instincts are the assets. The ISIS family is not. A Victorian time desk can host the same vicious workplace chatter only if the new leads are written as specifically as Pam Poovey or Dr. Krieger, not as costumes for old cadences.

What a Two-Season Order Buys

Straight-to-series pickups of this size are still uncommon on HBO’s own channel, and they change how a room works. Two seasons let a staff plant payoffs, design a time-travel rule set, and cast voices who can be held through a second batch. They also lock money and calendar before a single rating comes in.

WHAT TWO SEASONS LOCK

  • The room: Reed, Willis, and Yates can write past a first-season reset and still have a second year already paid.
  • The voices: A regular cast can be hired against two seasons instead of a one-year gamble, which matters in adult animation.
  • The rules: A show about voyaging “back and forth through time” needs continuity the audience can track, and two seasons is the minimum for that machine to show itself.
  • The brand: HBO, not Max, is the listed home, which puts the series next to the network’s live-action comedies rather than the streamer’s cartoon shelf.

That is not a premiere date. It is not a drawing style. Archer’s limited animation, with thick outlines and mid-century comic staging, was a Floyd County signature. Merrick & Treves has not shown a still. Until it does, the only style on the page is the creators’ statement, which already sounds like their old shows talking to a new network.

No Cast, No Date, and One HBO Line

The October 13 announcement left the usual holes. No voice cast. No artist. No window. Gravitt’s brief was admiration for the three names, not a schedule. Reed, Willis, and Yates have not posted a follow-up that adds a character or a year.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The order: HBO committed to two half-hour seasons on October 13, 2026.
  • The makers: Reed, Willis, and Yates co-created the series and will executive produce, with Begleiter and Wu alongside them from TFC Productions.
  • The premise: A secret Victorian time unit tries to stop Jack the Ripper, under a title taken from Merrick and Treves.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The voices: No cast has been named, including whether Reed or Yates will perform.
  • The calendar: No premiere year, episode count per season, or drawing studio has been issued.
  • The leads: HBO has not said how closely the cartoon pair will track the historical Merrick and Treves.

Two seasons is a large first check and a small life if the show stops there. Frisky Dingo stopped there. Animals got one extra year and then stopped. Archer ran until FXX would not give Willis the two more seasons the staff thought it still had. HBO has now written that same number, two, against a new title set in a hospital district that already had enough real horror for one century. The next fact worth reporting is a voice, a still, or a date.
