MLB Ties Its 154-Game Season to 2029 TV Deals
MLB’s 154-game plan, set for 2029, creates a Monday national TV window and a longer October, but only if players accept a salary cap.
Major League Baseball proposed a 154-game regular season starting in 2029, cut from 162, and a best-of-seven Division Series. The plan went to the union on Thursday and is tied to a salary cap players have already rejected.
The 2029 date is not a random health target. It is the first season after every current national media deal expires, and the league wants a dark Monday that can be sold as a weekly showcase.

The Shorter Season Starts When the TV Deals Do
MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said a return to 154 games would add a weekly off day that is “good for player health” while creating a new national broadcast window. The same league write-up says extra October off days would raise ratings and the value of media rights. Health and inventory are in the same sentence because they are the same calendar.
Clubs now play 162 games over 187 days. The proposed slate is 154 games over 180 days in most years, eight fewer games and seven fewer days, with the regular season ending a week earlier. A World Series Game 7 would land only two days later than it does now. That is how the league makes room for a longer postseason without pushing November deeper into football.
ESPN, NBC and Netflix signed three-year pacts that the league has valued at $800 million a year combined, and Fox’s World Series package is listed at $729 million a year. All of them run through 2028. The 154-game calendar is dated for the season when those contracts reopen.
NATIONAL DEALS SET TO EXPIRE
| Partner | Core package | Annual fee | Runs through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fox | World Series and Saturday games | $729 million | 2028 |
| ESPN | 30 national games and MLB.TV | $550 million | 2028 |
| NBC | Sunday Night Baseball and Wild Card | $200 million | 2028 |
| Netflix | Home Run Derby and specials | $50 million | 2028 |
A lockout that wrecks 2027 would scramble that reopen, which is why the schedule talk and the cap fight are on the same table. The product MLB wants to sell in 2029 needs a 2027 season that owners are already preparing to freeze.
Most Mondays Would Go Dark
Starting in 2029, Monday would be an off day for almost every club. Up to two nationally broadcast games could still be scheduled that night, and teams that play Monday would then sit on Thursday. National holidays and a handful of special events would keep Monday baseball, because those dates already draw. Minor league clubs have had Monday off since 2021, and MLB says the extra rest after Sunday day games has been well received.
THE 154-GAME WEEK
- Monday window: Most clubs sit; up to two national games fill the night.
- Thursday swap: Any team that works Monday gets Thursday off.
- Holiday exception: Monday games stay on national holidays, when crowds are already large.
- Split doubleheaders: Each club plays four, one against each division rival.
- Earlier finish: The regular season ends a week sooner than it does now.
MLB said player salaries would not be cut to match the shorter slate. Bonus thresholds that pay for games played, and similar clauses, would be scaled to 154. Players would be paid for fewer nights of work at the same annual rate, and they would lose four home dates apiece. Counting-stat records that need a 162-game runway would get harder to catch.
Nine Extra Off Days in a Longer October
Owners also proposed adding nine off days to the current postseason, stretching it to a maximum of 42 days. Each best-of-seven series would run over 11 days instead of nine, with extra rest before Games 5 and 7 on top of the travel days before Games 3 and 6. The Division Series, best-of-five since it became an annual round in 1995, would go to seven games in 2029 and could add as many as eight postseason games a year.
OCTOBER UNDER THE PLAN
- Series length: Division Series becomes best-of-seven over 11 days.
- Extra inventory: Up to eight added postseason games across the four Division Series.
- Wild Card: Stays best-of-three at the higher seed, with an extra day off between Games 1 and 2.
- Daily slate: Only two games on each of the first three days, down from as many as four.
Caplin said the shorter regular season would mean fewer weekday afternoon games and more nights for the best starting pitchers. Early-round afternoon dates have left some clubs staring at empty seats, and the staggered starts are the fix. Off days before the non-guaranteed League Championship Series games would also keep those nights from overlapping, so a Game 5, 6 or 7 would not share the window with the other league.
A seven-game Division Series can help the better team survive a short series. It can also give an underdog another night to knock a favorite out, which is what a best-of-five already did to the Yankees this October against Tampa Bay.
The No. 1 Seed Picks Its Path
The reseeding piece would start in 2027, two years before the 154-game slate. After the regular season, each league’s No. 3 seed, the division winner with the third-best record, would choose whether to host the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the Wild Card Series. After that round, each No. 1 seed would pick which Wild Card winner to play in the Division Series. The top two clubs would still get byes.
MLB says the choice would raise the value of regular-season record, kill any benefit of sneaking in as the third wild card, and manufacture rivalries. The league floated a version of pick-your-opponent in 2022 bargaining as part of a 14-team field that players refused. Among the NFL, NBA and NHL, no league lets a higher seed choose who it plays.
This October already supplied the argument. The Yankees met the Rays in the American League Division Series while Cleveland and Chicago played on the other side, a bracket that packed the East into one path. Under the new rule, a No. 1 seed could steer around a hot wild-card club or pick a fight it wants on television. Bulletin-board material comes free with the selection.
Why Baseball Left 154 Games Behind
The 154-game season is not a lost golden age. It was arithmetic. From 1904, eight-team leagues played every rival 22 times. That math broke when the American League added the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Senators in 1961. Nine rivals times 18 games equaled 162. The National League, still at eight clubs, played 154 that year and copied 162 in 1962 when the Mets and Houston Colt.45s arrived.
MLB historian John Thorn has said 154 became bad math once each club had nine rivals instead of seven, which is why the sport settled on 18 games against nine rivals. Later expansions, divisions and interleague play all had to be bent to keep 162 in place. A 154-game season in a 30-team league with six divisions is a product choice, not a return to the old grid.
HOW THE CALENDAR GREW
- 1904: Both leagues adopt 154 games, 22 against each of seven rivals.
- 1961: The American League moves to 162 games; the National League stays at 154 for one more year.
- 1962: The National League switches to 162 after expansion.
- 1969: The League Championship Series begins as a best-of-five.
- 1985: The LCS expands to best-of-seven.
- 1995: The Division Series becomes an annual best-of-five round.
- 2012: Wild-card games arrive as the field grows to 10 teams.
- 2022: A 12-team field turns the wild card into a best-of-three series.
The objection that 154 erases baseball history runs into that timeline. The sport played 154 for more than half a century, then spent the next six decades defending 162 because the expansion math required it. What changes now is not the ghost of 1960. It is who controls Monday night and who controls October rest.
Nothing Moves Without a Salary Cap
The union’s answer arrived the same afternoon. Players will review the scheduling papers, it said, and reply at the table. The rest of the statement was the actual negotiation.
Unfortunately, the league once again made clear that all of its proposals are contingent on players’ agreement to a salary cap, a system that guts player rights and compensation, as well as its other anti-player proposals.
Major League Baseball Players Association, statement, Oct. 8, 2026
In May, owners asked for a hard cap of $245.3 million for 2027, including player benefits, and a payroll floor of $171.2 million. MLBPA executive director Bruce Meyer said in June that package would have cost players more than $500 million if it had been in place for 2026, and he has called it worse for players than the other major U.S. leagues. In an August statement he said a cap system would slash overall pay, end fully guaranteed contracts through escrow, and roll back basic player rights.
The current five-year deal expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 1. MLB negotiator Dan Halem told clubs they should be ready if there is “no realistic alternative but to implement a lockout of major league players.” Owners locked players out for 99 days in 2021-22 and still played 162 games. The 1994-95 strike ran 232 days and cancelled the World Series. Meyer has said a lockout is guaranteed if there is no deal by expiration. The Monday window, the seven-game Division Series and the 154-game slate are all paper until that fight is settled.
Rest Days Cut the Shuttle to the Minors
The health case is not empty. From 2022 through 2025, clubs averaged 24% fewer optional assignments in weeks with an off day, 1.45 per week against 1.90 in weeks with none. MLB says that shuttle has worn out players and fans. A 2025 paper in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine found starting pitchers on teams that averaged more than five days of rest between starts spent fewer injured-list days per 1,000 pitches, 10.7 against 13.6 for staffs under five days, in 2022 and 2023. The league mean was 4.80 days of rest. The study did not find a clear drop in how often pitchers actually went on the IL.
Eight fewer games also means four fewer home dates for every owner, and a thinner line for anyone chasing a single-season counting record. The league is offering rest and a better October in the same envelope as a cap, a floor and limits on contract value and length. Players can like Monday nights off and still refuse the envelope.
The 2029 calendar is a finished TV product: dark Mondays, a national window, a longer Division Series, and aces lined up for Games 5, 6 and 7. It sits behind a December 1 deadline that owners have already told their clubs to treat as a lockout. Until that date moves, 154 games is a broadcast deck, not a schedule.
