Midnight Fantastic Four Repeats Marvel’s Dark Universe Ritual

Midnight Fantastic Four hits shops on October 7 as one of three Marvel comics that day, and Reed Richards does not know Sue Storm. Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm are strangers to him too. Writer Benjamin Percy and artist Kev Walker are building that gap into a cosmic horror origin for Marvel’s Midnight Universe.

Marvel has reached for this team before when it wanted a new universe to feel dangerous. The zombies walked in through an Ultimate Fantastic Four portal in 2005. Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski put Midnight in that same line of experiments, from the New Universe through two Ultimate Universes.

October 7 Belongs to the Midnight Books

Marvel will publish no other new comics on October 7. Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight Spider-Man share the date, a first for the company, after a June plan that collapsed three staggered launches into one. Executive Editor Dan Buckley said the company wanted a launch that let shops and readers drop into the line at once.

The tagline is “The light had its turn.” Launch copy says the Fantastic Four venture into the unknown to unleash terror upon it. Hickman’s mutants hunger for blood. Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s Peter Parker becomes a spider hybrid built by Oscorp. Johnson has said a Blade book would have looked like business as usual, because Blade already lives in horror. The Four, the X-Men, and Spider-Man do not.

Final order cutoff for the first issues was August 31. Percy posted that day to remind shops the Midnight books were on the clock. Advance copies in retailers’ hands already read as a merciless inversion: colleagues and survivors, not champions.

THE OCTOBER 7 LINEUP

Main covers after the debuts ship as Cloaked Covers, with the art hidden until a reader opens the book. A matching variant ladder (Bloodbath, Special, Horror Homage, Gallery) runs across all three titles each month. Editor Jordan D. White told the San Diego Comic-Con panel that the three series share one continuity.

Reed Richards Does Not Know Their Names

Percy has been blunt about the starting positions. At the start, he said, none of these people are together. Reed has no idea who Sue is, who Ben is, who Johnny is. Marvel’s later preview quoted him calling the book an origin story in which a very different breed of family is born, “far more toxic and complicated.”

The #1 solicit is the accident, not the household. An obsessive scientist opens secrets “perhaps best left unknown,” and he and three others come back warped. What they found in those new dimensions, and whether anyone else can survive the finding, is the question the issue is selling.

Let’s be honest: any other circumstances, Marvel wouldn’t let me write the Fantastic Four. Because I’m too mean and evil for the first family. But this is the dark continuity of the Midnight Universe, a fresh origin story for the characters that channels cosmic, Lovecraftian terror, which makes it a perfect match for me.

He also said the pacing is patient, full of dread and mystery, and rich with a mythology that should feel both familiar and uncanny. Mad science, cults, and hidden realities are on the list. At Comic-Con he added a personal source for the cult imagery: he grew up around family members who had been involved in a cult.

Each of the four, he said, has to face an internal haunting before they can face the thing coming at them from outside. That is the opposite of the usual first-issue group hug. Hickman’s X-Men book is making a similar bet, isolation instead of found family, which is how you know the line is coordinated.

Storm Systems and the Offer From Sue

The second issue does not open on a rocket. Reed, haunted by a past he can barely recall and a breakthrough he can barely understand, begins a tenuous working relationship at Storm Systems with Sue, Johnny, and Ben. They are about to test a theory that will, the solicit says, revisit the perils of the atomic age. On sale November 18.

Early pages Marvel has circulated from issue 1 fill in how that job starts. Reed is a lecturer who taught Victor Von Doom at the New York Institute of Technology and then lost the post. He and Victor go back for a “gate.” The experiment ends the old life. Sue Storm arrives with an offer. Ben Grimm is with her as security. Johnny Storm is the pilot who picks them up. The next stop is Storm Systems headquarters.

Sue is the one with the company. Reed is the damaged hire. For a franchise that spent decades making Reed the husband, the boss, and the brain of the Baxter Building, that is a real swap, and it is how this version of the Four can exist without being a family first. In Latveria, the same pages show someone trying to bring Victor back.

Percy told a podcast audience the same thing in plainer words: they are not together at the start. The #2 text is the proof. Colleagues who shared a horror, on a payroll with Storm on the letterhead.

Flesh Moves and Bones Stay Put

Walker’s concept art, shown at Comic-Con, recasts the famous 4. The mark is two triangles. They stand for the intersection of universes, not four teammates standing in a room. The costume still says Fantastic Four. The geometry says otherwise.

Percy’s Reed is the cracked-mirror version of the stretching power. He described it in the room: Reed puts a hand on a locked door, and skin, veins, and muscle drip and slide under the gap, then climb the other side to unlock it from within before pulling back into the hand. The flesh moves. The bones stay.

A fan asked whether Sue’s invisibility might fail the same way, leaving organs or a skeleton in view if the power does not finish the job. Percy would not confirm the skeleton. He said the book will work “the full spectrum” of that kind of body horror.

HOW THE POWERS GO WRONG

• The 4: Two triangles stand for intersecting universes, not four people.
• Reed’s stretch: Skin, veins, and muscle drip and slide; the skeleton does not travel with them.
• Sue’s turn: Percy left the exact fail state unsaid and promised the full range of body horror.
• The order of pain: Each person gets a private haunting before the group faces the outside threat.

That is why the family talk around this book keeps missing the object on the chest. If the 4 is a map of colliding worlds, the team name is a warning about the experiment, not a promise that these four will love each other.

Zombies First Came Through This Team

Cebulski, announcing Midnight, reached for Marvel’s last few sandbox launches on purpose. “From the original New Universe to two Ultimate Universes, Marvel has a long history of creating and inspiring bold worlds filled with unforgettable characters and fresh ideas that feel new yet recognizable at the same time,” he said. Midnight, in that telling, is the horror pass at the same habit.

The Four are the habit’s favorite door. Ultimate Fantastic Four launched in 2004 as a younger, harsher take. In 2005, issues 21 through 23 of that series let a zombie Reed lure the Ultimate Reed through a portal, looking for a fresh world to eat. That crossover is where Marvel Zombies begins. The undead Four failed to bag their double and still became the face of the craze that followed.

WHEN MARVEL USED THE FOUR TO OPEN A DARK ROOM

1. 2004: Ultimate Fantastic Four starts as a younger, fractured version of the team.
2. 2005: Marvel Zombies first appear in Ultimate Fantastic Four #21, with a zombie team baiting another Reed through a gate.
3. June 18, 2026: Marvel announces Midnight and sets all three #1s for October 7 as the only new Marvel comics that day.
4. October 7, 2026: Midnight Fantastic Four #1 goes on sale beside Midnight X-Men and Midnight Spider-Man.

The 616 Fantastic Four did not vanish to make room. Ryan North’s book is still in shops, and October also has them tangled in a crossover that wipes their memories for a different plot. Midnight is a side room. That is how the older experiments worked too. The zombies did not replace Reed and Sue. They made a second Reed who wanted to eat him.

Too Mean for the First Family

Buckley traced Midnight to a phone call. He had horror on his mind, rang Hickman, and flipped the usual mix: horror in the driver’s seat, superheroes riding along. Hickman was cool at first, then found an X-Men angle, then suggested Johnson for Spider-Man. Percy has joked that the call came from a landline in the basement of an abandoned house, wires cut, blood in the receiver. He said yes. He has also said, without the joke, that when he pictured a poisoned Marvel, his mind went to the Fantastic Four, a book he loved and would never be allowed to write on the main line.

Hickman, on the record in the June announcement, said he got excited again when Marvel revamped the launch, because he had read Ben’s and Phillip’s first scripts, and then the art, and knew the line was going to be special. That is the usable version of a later rumor that he threw his own first issue away. What he actually signed his name to is simpler: Percy’s Four was already setting a bar before any of the books existed on a stand.

The three writers have been building in parallel, with a Glendale retreat, shared mood boards, and a rare black-and-white ashcan handed out at Comic-Con. Outlines, they said on stage, run well past issue one. Johnson has said he has never written a longer series outline than the one for Midnight Spider-Man, and that he wants that book to be the longest of his career. Midnight is not a one-shot costume gag. It is the slot Ultimate just left, rebuilt as horror.

The Four Head to Jornada del Muerto

Issue 3, on sale December 16, is where the atomic-age line in the #2 solicit stops being a metaphor. The Four go to the Jornada del Muerto desert in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was detonated by Oppenheimer and the Los Alamos labs. There they find the residue of another world, left behind by a crack in the firmament.

That sequence is the origin in slow motion. Issue 1 is the gate and the warping. Issue 2 is the job at Storm Systems. Issue 3 is a bomb site with another universe leaking through. If they become a team, they become one on poisoned ground, as coworkers who already failed once.

Shops have already placed the October orders. The 616 book will still be there the same month, memories or no memories. Midnight Fantastic Four is the other Reed, the one Marvel keeps in a dark room so the first family can stay famous while someone mean enough finally gets to write them.
