Wanderers Gets the 2027 World Cup Final and India-Pakistan
The ICC gave Johannesburg the 2027 World Cup final and India vs Pakistan, then pre-seeded a Super 7 that already parks India vs Australia at Victoria Falls.
The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg will host the 2027 men’s ODI World Cup final on 21 November, plus India vs Pakistan on 10 October. The ICC set those two days at South Africa’s biggest cricket ground, which holds more than 30,000, when it published the full draw on 1 October 2026 in Cape Town.
The 14th edition runs from 2 October to 21 November 2027 across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. What the fixture grid actually does is lock the second half of the tournament before a ball is bowled.
Johannesburg Kept the Two Biggest Days
The launch sat at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, framed as the official one-year countdown. Under the line “Three Nations, One Heartbeat,” the ICC confirmed a 14-team event of 57 matches across 12 venues: eight in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia.
India vs Pakistan is the Sunday of the opening weekend. Defending champions Australia meet India three days earlier in Cape Town. The final returns to Johannesburg on 21 November, with a reserve day on 22 November.
Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, tied the schedule drop to a free global ballot that opened the same day.
The announcement of the schedule and opening of the ticket ballot are major milestones on the road to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, bringing fans one step closer to a spectacular celebration of cricket across the three nations.

Entry-level tickets sit at about $9.50 (R158), with the top band at about $30 (R514). Fans can enter the World Cup ticket ballot until 23:59 SAST on 21 November 2026, one entry per person per match, with no payment at registration. Where demand beats supply, a random draw decides who gets the chance to buy.
The governing body posted the calendar the same afternoon.

The Super 7 Fixtures Are Already on Paper
Group games still decide who goes through. They do not decide where the survivors play. The ICC has already parked seven sides in Super 7 slots so venues and travel can be sold a year out, and those slots keep their dates even if a team finishes second or third in its group.
India are A1, Australia A2 and Pakistan A3. England hold the floating fourth seed, AB4. New Zealand are B1, South Africa B2 and Sri Lanka B3. If an unseeded side knocks a seeded side out, it inherits that side’s Super 7 shirt. Bangladesh taking Sri Lanka’s B3 place, and walking into Australia at Johannesburg on 25 October, is the example the ICC itself used.
The Super 7 is a 21-match round robin from 25 October to 14 November. Each of the seven teams plays six games, with no points carried over from groups. The top four reach the semis, first versus fourth and second versus third.
IF THE SEEDS GO THROUGH
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 28 October 2027 | India vs Australia | Victoria Falls |
| 30 October 2027 | Pakistan vs England | Victoria Falls |
| 31 October 2027 | South Africa vs India | Johannesburg |
| 7 November 2027 | India vs Pakistan | Cape Town |
| 14 November 2027 | India vs Sri Lanka | Durban |
That Cape Town date is a second India vs Pakistan meeting, sitting 28 days after the group game in Johannesburg. Putting both in Group A, then labelling them A1 and A3, is how a broadcast calendar gets two bites without waiting on the draw. The group stage still has to spit both names out. The map assumes it will.
Why Newlands Got the 2023 Final Rematch
Newlands in Cape Town opens the 12-team group stage on 7 October with India vs Australia, a rerun of the 2023 final, and it also holds semi-final one on 17 November. Semi-final two is in Tshwane (Centurion) on 18 November. Both knockout games have a reserve day.
South Africa start against New Zealand at Newlands on 9 October, a rematch of their 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final. The mountain ground got the postcard days. It did not get India vs Pakistan, and it did not get the final.
Johannesburg also holds South Africa vs India on 31 October in the Super 7. The City of Gold keeps the crowd days. Cape Town keeps the pictures, then a possible second India vs Pakistan on 7 November if the seeds hold.
A 10,000-Seat Ground Beside the Falls
Zimbabwe’s new Mosi-oa-Tunya Stadium in Victoria Falls is listed at 10,000 seats. It stages the last group match, India vs Zimbabwe on 24 October, the first World Cup game at the ground. Then the pre-seeded Super 7 drops three more there in a week.
VICTORIA FALLS ON THE GRID
- 24 October: Zimbabwe vs India, last group match.
- 28 October: India vs Australia, if both hold their Super 7 seeds.
- 30 October: Pakistan vs England, same condition.
- 1 November: Australia vs New Zealand, same condition.
A ground a quarter the size of the Wanderers is already down for a Super 7 India vs Australia. That is the working draw for tickets, not a leftover. Zimbabwe play all five of their group games at home: Qualifier A in Bulawayo on 9 October, Afghanistan there on 11 October, Australia in Harare on 15 October, Pakistan in Harare on 19 October, then India at the Falls.
The ICC said Zimbabwe are back after a 12-year absence. Their group is India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Qualifier A. Home yards do not flatten that list, but they do keep every Zimbabwe group night inside the country.
Namibia Opens a World Cup It May Not Play
The Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek stages the Super Series on 2, 4 and 6 October, then three group matches, two of them England’s. England vs Bangladesh is on 8 October, Sri Lanka vs Qualifier B on 10 October, England vs Sri Lanka on 13 October.
Namibia are a co-host and an Associate. Automatic places went only to the Full Member hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe, plus the next eight sides on the men’s ODI rankings at the 30 September 2026 cut-off. Namibia still have to come through the Qualifier if they want to play in the tournament they are opening.
They co-hosted the Under-19 World Cup with Zimbabwe in 2026. Senior playing rights are a different door. If they do not make the 14, Windhoek still hosts other people’s cricket for a week, including the three-team playoff that decides the last group seat.
Trevor Manuel, independent chair of the local organising board, said Southern Africa was ready to take the event back, and that supporters should leave with more than match tickets. The Super Series is the part of that promise that does not need Namibia to qualify.
Fourteen Teams Spread Across 12 Grounds
Ten sides are already in the group stage. The other four come from the 2027 Qualifier, a 10-team event still hunting a venue, likely in South Africa or Namibia. The Qualifier winner goes straight into the groups. The next three play the Super Series, and only the Super Series winner joins the 12.
THE TWO GROUPS
| Group A | Group B |
|---|---|
| India | New Zealand |
| Australia | South Africa |
| Pakistan | Sri Lanka |
| Afghanistan | England |
| Zimbabwe | Bangladesh |
| Qualifier A | Qualifier B |
Each group of six plays a round robin. The top three in each group go to the Super 7, plus the better fourth-placed side. That is 30 group matches after the three Super Series games, then 21 Super 7 matches, two semis and a final.
THE FOUR ROUNDS
- Super Series: three lowest-ranked of the 14, round robin in Windhoek, one side advances.
- Group stage: 12 teams, two groups of six, 30 matches from 7 to 24 October.
- Super 7: seven teams, 21 matches, top four go through.
- Knockouts: Cape Town on 17 November, Tshwane on 18 November, Johannesburg on 21 November.
THE TOURNAMENT IN FOUR FIGURES
- 14 teams: two Full Member hosts, eight ranked sides, four from the Qualifier path.
- 57 matches: 3 + 30 + 21 + 2 + 1, from 2 October to 21 November 2027.
- 12 venues: Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Harare, Bulawayo, Cape Town, Paarl, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Bloemfontein, Durban, KuGompo City and Gqeberha.
- Ballot window: open until 23:59 SAST on 21 November 2026, the calendar twin of final day a year later.
The July redesign, signed off at the ICC’s Edinburgh meetings, shrank the original plan of two groups of seven and a Super 6. Officials wanted fewer dead rubbers after a T20 World Cup full of foregone conclusions. The Super Series is the blunt instrument: three teams, one seat, then the 12-team draw the broadcasters can sell.
The Same Bowl That Staged Ponting’s 140
On 23 March 2003, Australia made 359 for 2 at the Wanderers and beat India by 125 runs. Ricky Ponting finished 140 not out off 121 balls. Damien Martyn made 88 not out. India were bowled out for 234 in 39.2 overs. The crowd that day was 31,827.
Twenty-four years later the final is back in the same bowl. The group stage even opens with India vs Australia, the sides who met in the 2023 final, before India vs Pakistan arrives in Johannesburg on 10 October.
FROM 2003 TO THE 2027 FINAL
- 23 March 2003: Australia beat India by 125 runs in the World Cup final at the Wanderers.
- 1 October 2026: ICC names Johannesburg for the 2027 final and for India vs Pakistan on 10 October 2027.
- 2 October 2027: Super Series begins in Windhoek.
- 7 October 2027: India vs Australia opens the group stage at Newlands.
- 21 November 2027: final in Johannesburg, reserve day 22 November.
South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya hosted in 2003. Kenya is off the map this time; Namibia is on it, with no guaranteed XI. The Wanderers still has the last word, as it did when Ponting hit the upper deck at the Golf Course End.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Does the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup Start and End?
The Super Series starts on Saturday, 2 October 2027 in Windhoek, and the final is on Sunday, 21 November 2027 in Johannesburg. Group cricket does not begin until 7 October, five days after the first Super Series match, so the India vs Australia game at Newlands is the start of the 12-team event rather than the start of the World Cup itself.
Where Will the 2027 World Cup Final Be Played?
The final is at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 21 November 2027, with 22 November held as a reserve day. Semi-final one is in Cape Town on 17 November and semi-final two is in Tshwane on 18 November, and both of those knockout games also have a reserve day.
How Does the Super 7 Stage Work?
Seven teams play each other once in a 21-match round robin, and the top four go to the semis as first versus fourth and second versus third. A team that qualifies keeps its pre-seeded slot even if it did not win its group, so India remain A1 if they finish second or third, while an unseeded qualifier simply takes the slot of the seeded side it replaces.
Which Teams Have Already Qualified for 2027?
Ten teams were in as of the 30 September 2026 rankings cut-off: hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, plus the next eight Full Members on the ODI table, which locked in India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh. The last four places, including both group-stage qualifier berths and the three Super Series sides, wait on the 2027 Qualifier.
Does Namibia Get a Playing Spot as Co-Host?
No. Only Full Member hosts received automatic playing places, so Namibia must reach the 14 through the Qualifier and, if they finish second, third or fourth there, through the Super Series in their own capital. Windhoek still hosts those three Super Series matches and three group games whether Namibia’s senior side is on the field or not.
