Vijay’s Silverstone Stop Was a Motor Sports City Brief

Vijay’s Silverstone flag-off was on Tamil Nadu’s UK brief as a Motor Sports City study, while the opposition still wants a meeting list.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inspected Silverstone on September 12 and flagged off a 44-car Michelin Le Mans Cup race. The opposition says the pictures look like a film outing, and it wants a list of investors met before he flies home on September 17.

A state release issued on September 10 had already named Silverstone as a study stop for a Motor Sports City that still has no site. The people on that brief are a sports minister, a sports-authority secretary, the state’s investment agency, and an endurance racer who asked the chief minister to look at the track.

Silverstone Was on the Brief Before the Pictures

Vijay left Chennai airport at 10.05 p.m. on September 10, flying to London via Dubai on his first official overseas trip since taking office on May 10. The government said he would return to Chennai on September 17. The same statement said the Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit was scheduled so the team could study design, safety systems, and how a big circuit is run as a business.

That line sat next to the investment pitch, not after a photo leak. The sectors named were advanced manufacturing, automobiles and electric vehicles, electronics, and Global Capability Centres. The release also tied the week to the India-UK trade deal and to a Motor Sports City Vijay had announced in the Assembly on September 3, seven days before he boarded.

THE LONDON CALENDAR

  1. September 3, 2026: Announces a Motor Sports City in the Assembly under Rule 110, with no location named.
  2. September 10, 2026: Leaves Chennai at 10.05 p.m.; a state release lists Silverstone as a study visit.
  3. September 11, 2026: Reaches London via Dubai.
  4. September 12, 2026: Inspects the track, then waves the green flag for the Michelin Le Mans Cup.
  5. September 13, 2026: Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin calls him an uncouth and dummy chief minister.
  6. September 17, 2026: Scheduled return to Chennai.

The Chief Minister’s Office said he walked the layout and safety systems on Saturday before the start. Public Works and Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu member secretary J. Meghanatha Reddy were there with him, which is the sports half of the brief made visible.

Who Travelled With the Chief Minister?

The published party is small, and it is not an industries-ministry travelling circus. Guidance Tamil Nadu managing director and chief executive Deepak Jacob is on the trip, which puts the state’s investment promotion and single-window agency in the room. Guidance, set up in 1992, is the body that is supposed to turn investor talks into files, sites, and clearances.

THE PUBLISHED DELEGATION

Person Role On the UK list
Aadhav Arjuna Public Works and Sports Development Minister Yes
J. Meghanatha Reddy SDAT member secretary Yes
Deepak Jacob Guidance Tamil Nadu MD and CEO Yes
S. Keerthana Industries Minister Not named
Trisha Krishnan Actor, in London for a film shoot Not on the government list

DMK leader T.K.S. Elangovan seized on that mix. He said neither the industries minister nor the secretary had gone, that no formal schedule had been announced, and that Vijay had taken “his friend from outside the government with him.” He added that not a single penny would come to Tamil Nadu while Vijay is chief minister.

BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran asked whether the journey was official or personal, who had travelled, and whether state money had paid for it. Actor Trisha Krishnan was photographed at the circuit while shooting a film in London, which is the still that turned a track inspection into a cinema argument. She is not on the government list. The friend Elangovan mentioned has not been named by the state.

A Motor Sports City With No Pin on the Map

On September 3, under Rule 110, Vijay told the Assembly he would build a world-class Motor Sports City. He packed it with the same day’s other big pledges, a new Secretariat complex estimated at Rs 1,200 crore and an Olympic City in Chennai, so the racing plan arrived as a government project, not as a Saturday hobby.

He pointed to Tamil Nadu’s two-wheeler and four-wheeler plants and said vehicle makers already treat the state as a first stop for new factories. Motorsports manufacturing units, he said, already work in Coimbatore. The city he described would carry an international-standard racetrack, training kit, and the capacity to stage Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, and Formula 4. It would also be sold as sports tourism and as a base for race-car plants.

He did not name a district, a taluk, or a plot. Until a site exists, Silverstone is doing the work a feasibility tour does: show the sports minister and SDAT what a commercial circuit looks like when it is already built. That is a thinner claim than an investment cheque, and it is also a clearer one than a hug.

Ajith Invited Him to Inspect the Track

Ajith Kumar, the actor who now races endurance prototypes, was on the 44-car grid in the LMP3 Pro/Am class for Ajith RedAnt by Virage, sharing a Ligier with French driver Romain Vozniak. The Michelin Le Mans Cup account had posted on September 10 that a special guest, named as the Indian actor and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, would wave the green flag and support Indian drivers in the UK.

Ajith’s own words, given to reporters before the race, are the invitation the political row keeps skipping. He did not sell the visit as a fan meet. He sold it as a look at the kit Chennai does not yet have.

We have been colleagues in the film industry for 34 years, and I am so happy for him in his new journey. We extended the invitation so he could see firsthand what infrastructure and logistics it takes to bring events like this to Chennai. My wish is to see us all race back home in India soon

Ajith Kumar, actor and endurance racer, speaking at Silverstone

The hug that followed, Vijay in a brown jacket breaking into a jog, Ajith in a fireproof suit, is what filled phones. On September 14, posts showed Vijay gifting a signed miniature race car inscribed “Priyamudan Vijay to my lovely brother Ajith,” with a helmet coming back the other way. Ajith’s crew finished 38th overall. None of that names a factory. It does show why a film-star chief minister can get a ceremonial flag at Silverstone, and why every still from that hour will be used against the rest of the week.

The Meeting List the Opposition Still Does Not Have

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said he had first welcomed an overseas push for jobs. After the Silverstone pictures, he turned the welcome into a taunt. “The picture is different in the media,” he said. “See how he is attracting investments.”

Nagendran’s test is blunter, and it is the one the government has not yet met in public. He asked how many meetings a chief minister can hold on a short trip and what concrete pledges have come from it. “If it is a personal trip, there is nothing to say. But if he has gone to attract investments, he should explain whom he met and how much investment is expected,” he said, adding that Vijay should give those details after returning to Tamil Nadu.

WHAT THE OPPOSITION HAS ASKED

  • The purpose: Palaniswami and Nagendran want to know whether London is an investment tour or a personal trip.
  • The party: They want names of who travelled, including anyone outside government.
  • The bill: Nagendran asked whether government funds paid for the journey.
  • The take: They want companies met and investment sums, not circuit photographs.
  • The home front: Udhayanidhi tied the trip to power cuts, prices, and law and order, speaking at a wedding on September 13.

Udhayanidhi, speaking at a DMK youth-wing wedding, did not linger on Silverstone. He said the government had failed to deliver on election promises in its first four months, that people faced power cuts and rising prices of rice and pulses, and that law and order was sliding. “In Tamil Nadu’s history, we have never witnessed such an uncouth and dummy chief minister,” he said. He also said the government came to power by luring MLAs from other parties, and that it pastes new stickers on old welfare schemes.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The dates: The official window is September 10 to 17, with Silverstone on September 12.
  • The brief: The September 10 state release listed Silverstone as a Motor Sports City study visit.
  • The named officials: Arjuna, Reddy, and Jacob are on the published list.
  • The race: Vijay waved the green flag; Ajith’s team finished 38th.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • New London MoUs: No public list of UK companies signed during this trip had been issued by September 14.
  • State funding: The government has not published a cost sheet answering Nagendran.
  • The unnamed friend: Elangovan’s claim has not been matched to a name by the Chief Minister’s Office.
  • The city site: The Motor Sports City still has no notified land.

As of September 14, neither Vijay nor Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had answered the criticism. That silence is doing as much work as the hug. A meeting diary published from London would have changed the argument. A green flag cannot.

Day-One Consignments Under the UK Trade Deal

The economic case the state did put on paper is the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which the government said Tamil Nadu used on the first day it went live. Export consignments, the release said, left Chennai on that day. The sectors it flagged for the UK market were textiles and garments, leather and footwear, automobile components, engineering goods, and electronics.

The UK government said 99% of Indian goods entering the UK and 90% of UK goods entering India would be duty-free or on a lower tariff from that date, and that total UK-India trade was worth £48 billion in 2025. Trade minister Chris Bryant’s written statement recorded that CETA entered into force on 15 July 2026. Over the long run, the UK side has put the prize at a £25.5 billion lift in bilateral trade, with Indian GDP up £5.1 billion and UK GDP up £4.8 billion a year.

Those figures are the backdrop, not the haul from this week. The state said that within 100 days of the TVK government taking office it had signed MoUs exceeding ₹1 lakh crore at the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors’ Conference 2026. Separate from that headline, it said European multinational firms had proposed projects worth around ₹8,491 crore, expected to create work for about 5,690 people. Both tallies predate the London stills. They are the record Vijay is being asked to beat before September 17.

Irungattukottai Already Hosts National Car Races

Tamil Nadu is not starting from a blank paddock, which is why a Motor Sports City has something to copy and something to outgrow. Vijay named two working tracks in the Assembly: the Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai, near Chennai, and KARI Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, both used for national Formula 3 and Formula 4 races.

TRACKS TAMIL NADU ALREADY RUNS

Venue Where What it is now
Madras International Circuit Irungattukottai, near Chennai India’s first permanent circuit, opened in 1990; main layout 3.717 km with 12 turns; FIA Grade 2; cars up to F3
KARI Motor Speedway Coimbatore Named by Vijay as a national F3 and F4 venue, in a city he also flagged for motorsports factories
Motor Sports City Site not named Announced September 3 to host Formula 1 through Formula 4, with training and tourism built in

The Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai, owned by the Madras Motor Sports Club, was the first purpose-built race track in the country. Grade 2 and a car limit up to F3 is a long step from the Formula 1 capacity Vijay listed on September 3. That gap is the hidden project. Silverstone is where his sports minister and SDAT secretary went to watch a circuit that already sells that leap as a business, while the chief minister waved a flag for a colleague who races for a living.

Vijay is due back in Chennai on September 17. As of September 14, neither he nor his party had produced the company list Palaniswami and Nagendran have asked for, and the Motor Sports City still had no pin on the map.
