Porter’s Practice Return Leaves a 12-Day Pay Window

Joey Porter Jr. practiced Tuesday with no new deal and 11 days on the clock. The Pittsburgh Steelers took the cornerback off the physically unable to perform list on Sunday so he would not miss the first four games, then restated a club rule that kills contract talks once the regular season starts.

Pittsburgh wanted him on the field before talks restarted, and he practiced Tuesday without a signed extension. He still would not say if he will play the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 13.

Porter spoke to reporters for the first time since spring workouts, after his first practice since the club took him off PUP. He said a back injury was “the whole reason” he spent camp on the list, and that the back was “feeling pretty good,” though “I’m not saying it’s at 100%.” Head coach Mike McCarthy had already described a ramp-up for anyone returning for the first time, and said he expected Porter to be physically ready to practice before the opener.

The football answers were clean. The contract answers were not. Asked if he would play the Falcons if he was healthy, Porter said, “Yeah, for sure,” then added, “Maybe.” Asked if he saw himself playing that game, he said, “I can’t read the future.” Asked if a new deal would give him enough time to play, he called himself a ballplayer and an athlete and said that would not be much of a problem. Asked if he would play if a deal does not get done, he pointed upstairs.

He is 26, in the last year of the four-year rookie contract he signed on July 26, 2023, after Pittsburgh took him 32nd overall out of Penn State. He is due $3.92 million in cash this season against a $4.92 million cap charge, and he hits unrestricted free agency in 2027 if nothing changes. That is the number he would play under if he suits up without a new deal, and it is the number that would still govern him if he got hurt doing it.

Captain Cam Heyward, who has walked this road as a hold-in of his own, put the locker room on the record after practice. “There is no one in this locker room that doesn’t want Joey Porter on the field,” Heyward said. Porter said he has been getting advice from his father, former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter. The room can want him. It cannot sign him.

Coming Off the PUP List Avoided a Four-Game Sit

The club first put Porter on the active PUP list on May 20, then announced him on it again when camp opened after he aggravated his back in a mobility workout on July 28. He missed every preseason snap. Jalen Ramsey, who started camp on the same list, came off it on Aug. 24. Porter stayed put until cutdown night.

THE ROAD OFF THE PUP LIST

1. May 20, 2026: The club places Porter on the active physically unable to perform list during the spring program.
2. July 28, 2026: Pittsburgh announces him on the camp PUP list after a back issue in the mobility test.
3. Aug. 30, 2026: The Steelers activated him off the PUP list while cutting to 53, and they placed Donte Kent on reserve/PUP.
4. Aug. 31, 2026: General manager Omar Khan says healthy players are expected to practice and that the in-season talks ban still stands.
5. Sept. 1, 2026: Porter practices and will not commit to the opener.
6. Sept. 13, 2026: Pittsburgh hosts Atlanta, and the club’s contract window shuts.

League rules make that Sunday cut brutal. A player who stays on active PUP through the 53-man deadline moves to reserve/PUP and must miss at least the first four games. Clubs can open a 21-day practice window after Week 2 this season, but the player still cannot play those four games. Leaving Porter on the list would have parked a starting corner until mid-October. Taking him off ended the medical cover. Khan said the medical staff felt Porter was good to go. Porter says the back was real. Both things can be true, and only one of them still helps him at the table.

Once he is healthy and on the 53, a missed practice or a missed game is a business choice, not a treatment plan. That is the trap inside the club’s old demand to see him work. Seeing him work is also how Pittsburgh turns a PUP stay into a plain hold-in, with the opener 11 days away and no new money attached to the snaps.

What a Top Corner Gets Paid in 2026

Porter’s 2025 tape is the file he is selling. He played 14 games, missed three, and took 76.8% of the defensive snaps. He had 52 tackles, one sack, 14 passes defensed and one interception. He allowed 333 yards when targeted, gave up no touchdowns, and had six flags accepted against him. He has three interceptions in three seasons. He is 6-foot-2, physical, and home-grown. He is also asking to be paid with men who reset the position this year, while cornerbacks averaging more than $30 million are no longer a short list.

THE 2026 CORNERBACK MARKET

Witherspoon’s deal includes $101 million guaranteed. Ward’s two-year jump includes $52.3 million guaranteed. McDuffie’s Rams contract includes $100 million guaranteed. New England is still talking with Christian Gonzalez, which can push the top again before Pittsburgh’s own window shuts. Porter does not have to beat every one of those numbers to get rich. He does have to live with this: the highest-paid corner on his own team is already Ramsey, and Ramsey is healthy enough to have come off PUP two weeks ago.

Three Draft Classmates Already Cashed In

Omar Khan’s first draft as general manager was 2023. He has now signed three of those players to new long-term contracts this year, and the fourth is Porter. Nick Herbig held in during spring work, then got a new five-year contract on June 3 worth $100 million. Tight end Darnell Washington signed a new five-year contract the next day worth $42 million. Defensive tackle Keeanu Benton, after a 17-game season with 5.5 sacks, signed on Aug. 15. The club posted a new five-year deal, a $72 million defensive tackle contract that averages $18 million a year.

THE 2023 DRAFT CLASS PAYDAY

Herbig’s June deal is the comparison Porter can actually use. Pittsburgh had seen him in the offseason program, paid him before camp, and called it good faith. Porter’s retort writes itself: the edge rusher got paid after a hold-in, on a five-year ticket, without waiting for September. The club’s retort writes itself too. Herbig was a scheme fit they had already watched. Porter missed the spring work that would have shown first-year coordinator Patrick Graham how he fits, then missed camp under a first-year head coach. McCarthy does not have three years of Porter in his own system. He has a ramp-up and a calendar.

The other difference sits on the depth chart. The 53-man corner group is Ramsey, Porter, Jamel Dean, Asante Samuel Jr., Brandin Echols and Daylen Everette. Dean signed a three-year deal on March 13. Samuel signed a one-year deal on March 12. Everette is a third-round pick from this spring. A sit in Week 1 would hurt. It would not empty the position the way a Porter hold-in would have in 2024. That is why the leverage looks louder on television than it does in the building.

The Steelers Stop Talking on Sept. 13

Khan met the freeze head-on Monday. Pittsburgh will not negotiate during the regular season, he said, and that rule is not moving for this player. The opener against the Falcons at Acrisure Stadium is the last day on the private calendar. After that, the club will not talk with Porter, or with anyone else, about a new deal until the season ends.

We won’t talk publicly about the negotiations per se, but Joey knows how we feel about him, and I still hope Joey finishes his career here. Our policy is going to remain in place, but I’m not going to talk about negotiations.

He also said that in the next couple of weeks, anyone the club feels is healthy and available is expected to practice. Porter got taken off PUP, Khan said, because the medical staff felt he was good to go. That sentence is the club’s Week 1 argument in one line. If the back is well enough for the 53, it is well enough for Atlanta, unless Porter chooses otherwise.

WEEK 1 STAKES

• The date: Sunday, Sept. 13, against Atlanta, after which Pittsburgh will not talk contract.
• The roster: Porter is already on the 53, so a sit is a choice, not a PUP penalty.
• The risk: A practice or game injury on the $3.92 million year would hit him as a 2027 free agent, not as a man with new guarantees.
• The cover: Ramsey, Dean and Samuel Jr. give the staff a path to open the season if Porter stays in the locker room.

The freeze is a club rule, not a league rule. Other teams sign players in October. Pittsburgh will not, and that turns an ordinary gap in talks into a binary. Either there is a deal in the next 11 days, or Porter plays 2026 on the rookie number, or he sits and bets that a missed opener scares a front office that just spent the spring paying everyone but him. Win-now talk does not match a plan that can wait until 2027. The roster, with Ramsey and a veteran quarterback on a one-year deal, is built to win now. The checkbook is still on the old calendar.

A 2005 Holdout Still Shapes This Standoff

The report-first rule is not new, and Khan has been on both sides of it. In 2005, Hines Ward stayed out of camp for 15 days because he wanted to be paid with the league’s top receivers. The club refused to talk while he was away. Ward reported without a deal after coach Bill Cowher called him, then signed on Sept. 6, days before that season’s opener: a five-year contract worth $27.5 million with a $9 million signing bonus, the richest deal in club history at the time. Khan was the negotiator. The deadline was the same one on the wall now, the start of the regular season.

Ward had to walk into camp to restart the conversation. Porter has now walked onto the practice field. The sequel is uglier for him, because the act that reopens talks in Pittsburgh is also the act that can wreck the payday. He has to declare himself well, take the hits, and hope the back that cost him camp does not cost him 2027. The Steelers get a look at him in McCarthy’s program without writing a $33 million check first. If he plays well, they can still wait, because their own rule says they will wait. If he plays poorly, or gets hurt, the market he wanted is gone.

Porter said he and McCarthy are taking it day by day. That is a medical sentence. It is also a contract sentence. Eleven days from Wednesday, Pittsburgh hosts Atlanta, and the men upstairs put the phones away. He can play on $3.92 million, sit and test the room, or sign whatever is left on the table. The field was the condition. He met it. The clock did not stop.
