Aaron Judge Wants Game 1 After the Last Rushed Return

Aaron Judge took live BP Monday without running and is lobbying to start the Yankees wild-card opener 13 days after a soleus strain.

Aaron Judge took live batting practice on Monday at Yankee Stadium and still has not run outdoors, 13 days after straining the soleus in his right calf. The Yankees captain wants to start Tuesday’s American League wild-card opener against the Boston Red Sox anyway, and he said he has been doing “a lot of convincing.”

The last time New York let him skip a full buildup, he hit .174 in seven games and left a September game in Minnesota with this same leg. Game 1 is Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. ET in the Bronx. A moderate soleus strain’s usual floor sits after this best-of-three is over.

Judge Faced Live Pitching and Still Has Not Run

On Sunday he hit and threw indoors. On Monday he stepped in for four live batting-practice plate appearances against teammates, walking twice, taking a called third strike, and grounding back to the mound. He did not run on the field. He has not tried the bases since the strain, and he has not cut in the outfield. The running he has done has been on an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill.

THE MONDAY WORKOUT

  • On the field: Four plate appearances, two walks, one looking strikeout, one comebacker.
  • Indoors: Hitting and throwing on Sunday, more swinging on Monday.
  • The gap: No outdoor running, no base running, no defensive work in right field.

Manager Aaron Boone would not turn that session into a lineup card. “He’s making progress,” Boone said. “We’ll continue to see where he’s at.” The club has been preparing as if Judge will not be available, while leaving the door open if the medical staff signs off.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The injury: A moderate strain of the soleus in the right calf, suffered Sept. 16 at Minnesota, with a platelet-poor plasma injection about a week before Monday’s workout.
  • The work: Indoor hitting, throwing, treadmill running, and live batting practice, with no outdoor sprinting.
  • The roster: A 26-man wild-card list was due Tuesday, and Boone said several spots were still being weighed on Monday.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Game 1: Whether trainers clear him to be active against Boston, and in what role.
  • The position: Right field, designated hitter, or a pinch-hit look, if he is on the list at all.
  • The later games: Whether a Game 3 on Oct. 1 would be treated as a different medical question than Tuesday night.

Judge said he feels great and that he understands the downside. “Guys take risks every single day,” he said. “I know a lot of guys in here are banged up and dealing with stuff. So yeah, I understand the risks. I’ve got it all.” Giancarlo Stanton, working back from calf trouble of his own, ran the bases on Monday. The captain did not.

Seven September Games Exposed a Dead Fastball

Judge, 34, missed 84 games after a stress fracture in his right first rib, an absence the club timed at 99 days. The rib is believed to have started April 26 in Houston, when he dove and tried to avoid Jazz Chisholm Jr. He played through it, then went on the injured list after a May 31 game against the Athletics. He told the club he did not want a minor league rehab trip. New York agreed, and he started in right field on Sept. 8 against Colorado.

The seven-game return was the dress rehearsal for October, and it failed. He went 4-for-23 with one walk and 13 strikeouts. The only extra-base hit was a three-run homer on Sept. 14 in Minnesota, on a hanging breaking ball. TruMedia tracked him missing on 41 percent of his swings against fastballs in that stretch, more than double the 19 percent league average. Pitchers threw heaters past him. Then, in his seventh game back, the calf grabbed him in the first inning at Target Field, and he came out in the sixth.

JUDGE AT THE PLATE, THEN AND NOW

Stretch Games AVG / OBP / SLG HR Other
2025 season 152 .331 /.457 /.688 53 114 RBI, third AL MVP
2026 season 66 .241 /.360 /.511 18 41 RBI, 237 at-bats
Seven games after the rib 7 .174 /.208 /.304 1 13 strikeouts, 1 walk

His MLB player page still carries a 2026 line of .241 with 18 home runs in 66 games, with a.871 OPS. A year ago he won a batting title at.331 with 53 homers. Career, he sits at.291 with 386 home runs. The September version was not that hitter, and he has not had another official at-bat to close the gap.

THE YEAR THAT SHRANK

  1. April 26, 2026: Dives in Houston; the right first rib is later tied to that play.
  2. May 31, 2026: Last game before the rib injured list, after 31 games of trying to play through it.
  3. Sept. 8, 2026: Activated with no minor league games, starting in right field against Colorado.
  4. Sept. 16, 2026: Leaves a 13-inning loss at Minnesota with a right soleus strain.
  5. Sept. 19, 2026: Placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Sept. 17.
  6. Sept. 28, 2026: Faces live pitching; still has not run outdoors.

He later said that if the calf had gone in a rehab game, he would have been angrier. The choice to skip that trip was his, and Boone has not second-guessed it in public. The cost showed up in the box scores first, then in the trainer’s room.

A Moderate Soleus Does Not Heal in 13 Days

Boone called the strain moderate. Judge named the muscle. The soleus, he said, “is a little more crucial with running and hitting,” and it sat in “a different spot” from the calf issues he has played through before. He felt stiffness in the first inning on Sept. 16 and still tried to stay in. That is the same appetite he is bringing to the wild-card roster fight.

League notes on the injury say a strain of this kind normally takes at least three weeks to fully heal. Independent medical guides put Grade 2 strains need 3-6 weeks before a return to sport. A published look at 44 soleus injuries in athletes found a median soleus recovery of 29.1 days. Judge is trying to beat all of those clocks on day 13, with a best-of-three that cannot run past Oct. 1. Three weeks from Sept. 16 is Oct. 7, after this round is finished.

RECOVERY CLOCKS AGAINST THE SERIES

  • Judge’s clock: 13 days from the strain in Minnesota to Game 1 in the Bronx.
  • Club language: At least three weeks to fully heal a strain like this.
  • Grade 2 window: Three to six weeks before a full return to sport.
  • Soleus study: Median 29.1 days across 44 injuries, with a wide range by location.

He has already said the quiet part. “If it happened in May, maybe the timeline is a little different.” October is the reason the timeline is being squeezed. The injection was meant to speed healing, and it also shut him down from running and jumping for several days right as the regular season ended. He was eligible to come off the 10-day list for the finale against Baltimore and did not play. Live batting practice is not the same test as a first-to-third sprint, or a ball in the right-field corner with a runner tagging.

Who Sits If the Yankees Carry Him

Judge wants right field, not a stealth designated-hitter job. “I’m trying to come back as an outfielder because I think it helps our team the most, but however they see I fit in the best, I am going to try to do that,” he said. Ben Rice hit 41 home runs and spent 96 games as the DH. Slotting Judge there means parking that bat. Putting him in right field means asking a calf that has not run outdoors to cover Yankee Stadium’s largest outfield, in a series that starts with a left-hander.

Boston is opening with Payton Tolle, a 6-foot-6 lefty who went 9-6 with a 3.03 ERA. If Judge is inactive, more at-bats go to Heliot Ramos, who hit.198 (23-for-116) with four homers after the August trade from San Francisco and posted a.907 OPS against left-handed pitching. Ramos is the matchup play on paper. Judge is the presence play. Those are not the same thing on a 13-day soleus, and a wild-card roster only has 26 spots to spend.

A limited captain still changes how the Red Sox throw to the middle of the order, even if he is a DH who cannot take an extra base. That is the case for carrying him as a threat. The case against is simpler. New York already watched him miss heaters for a week, then grab at the same leg. Another roster spot in a three-game sprint is a reliever, a fourth outfielder who can run, or Stanton as a pinch hitter. Carrying a right fielder who has not run is how a short series gets longer in the wrong way.

New York’s Rotation Was Built for a Series Like This

The Yankees finished 93-68, second in the AL East and the top wild card. Boston went 87-75. New York took the season series 7-6 and hosts all three games. The winner goes to the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series. For two nights, and maybe a third, the baseball argument does not have to run through Judge’s calf.

Cam Schlittler takes Game 1 after a 14-6 season, a 1.95 ERA, and 239 strikeouts in 193 2/3 innings over 33 starts. Last October, in Game 3 of a wild-card rematch with these same Red Sox, he threw eight shutout innings with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Max Fried is lined up for Game 2 at 5-5 with a 2.80 ERA after elbow trouble. Gerrit Cole would get a Game 3 at 10-9 and 3.61. Tolle, then Sonny Gray (18-5, 2.72 ERA), is Boston’s front.

WILD CARD STARTING PITCHERS

Game Date Yankees Red Sox
Game 1 Sept. 29 Cam Schlittler, 14-6, 1.95 ERA Payton Tolle, 9-6, 3.03 ERA
Game 2 Sept. 30 Max Fried, 5-5, 2.80 ERA Sonny Gray, 18-5, 2.72 ERA
Game 3 (if needed) Oct. 1 Gerrit Cole, 10-9, 3.61 ERA TBD

New York’s staff led the American League with a 3.24 ERA. Sitting a compromised Judge for two games, then seeing whether the calf can actually run if the series goes the distance, fits that pitching. It also fits the calendar the muscle itself is on. A best-of-three does not need a 6-foot-7, 282-pound statue in right field. A longer October might.

Boone Will Wait Until the Card Is Due

Judge has been at odds with the public version of his own injury before. When Boone used the word moderate on Sept. 22, Judge said he did not know why those words came out, then added that Boone is “my guy.” He has said he does not make the roster. He has also said that if you ask him whether he will be back, the answer is yes. Those two sentences can live in the same locker and still force Boone to pick one on Tuesday.

I’ve been doing a lot of convincing, I feel like, so I’m going to keep doing that. But I think the most important thing is just making sure I’m healthy and ready to go for this long stretch. We got another month of baseball to play so I want to be ready for the long run we’re going to go on here for this next month.

Aaron Judge, Yankees captain, at Yankee Stadium

Boone’s job is the stretch Judge is describing, not the argument in front of the locker. Trent Grisham (hamstring) and Ryan Weathers (forearm) are other names in the same pile of Tuesday decisions. Stanton ran. Judge hit. The medical staff has to live with whatever name is printed at the top of the right-field line, because a soleus that goes again in Game 1 is not a story that ends on Tuesday.

The Long October He Keeps Talking About

Judge has spent most of 2026 watching other people fill the holes. “I’ve been out for most of the year, and this team has picked up the slack,” he said. “A lot of young guys that we called up stepped right in.” He wants to be out there for the first game of a month he keeps selling as the point of the risk. The irony is sitting in the dates. This wild-card round is over by Oct. 1. A three-week soleus clock, counted from Minnesota, lands on Oct. 7.

He already rushed one return to get “a couple of games in before the postseason.” Those games gave him a dead fastball bat, then a calf strain, then a week of convincing. Tuesday’s opener can use Schlittler. The month Judge wants is the one that starts after a calf can actually run.
