India’s Afghan T20I Turns Into a Japan Selection Trial

India lead Afghanistan 1-0 in Delhi, but Varun Chakaravarthy’s side strain and an unsolved fifth-bowler slot make Tuesday a Japan XI trial.

Varun Chakaravarthy has been ruled out of India’s remaining T20Is against Afghanistan after an MRI showed a side strain, a BCCI source said. India still lead 1-0 after Sunday’s seven-wicket win in Delhi and can seal the three-match series on Tuesday, September 15 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, with the toss around 7 p.m. and play at 7:30 p.m. IST. Captain Shreyas Iyer now has to replace the spinner who just bowled the cheapest spell of the night, and he still does not have a settled fifth bowler before Japan.

Varun Chakaravarthy Is Out After Four Tight Overs

Chakaravarthy returned 4-0-16-1 on Sunday, bowling Darwish Rasooli as Afghanistan slid to 43 for 5. He then sat in the post-match press conference and talked as if the only problem on the square was how to bowl at India’s batters. A BCCI source said the MRI showed a fresh side strain, that he is out of the series, and that he “looks unlikely” for the Asian Games.

He had only just come back. A hamstring injury in England ended his tour there, and he missed the Zimbabwe T20Is while rehabbing at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. The IPL had already cost him time with a hairline fracture in his left foot. On Sunday night he offered a plain reading of that cycle, before the scan caught up with him.

Injuries are common for sportspersons. It just shows that we are giving our best. Sometimes we push beyond our limits and that is when the body gives in. So that is when we have to take a step back, work better and come back stronger.

Varun Chakaravarthy, after the 1st T20I in Delhi

Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar are the named spin options still in the 15. Either would be a bowling upgrade on what Iyer used as filler on Sunday. The board has already been here once this month: it named Yash Thakur as Rana’s replacement for both this series and the Asian Games after Harshit Rana suffered a rectus femoris strain in a match simulation on September 7.

The Fifth Bowler Slot Cost 59 in Four

Hardik Pandya is not walking back into this attack. His last India appearance was the T20 World Cup final on March 9, 2026, and he is not in the 15 for Afghanistan or for Japan. Iyer tried to cover those overs with batting all-rounders. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube together went for 59 runs in four overs.

The specialist four of Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Chakaravarthy bowled 16 overs for 88 and took six wickets. India were never in a chase that asked those part-time overs to decide the game. That is why the hole still sits there for Tuesday.

HOW THE OVERS SPLIT ON SUNDAY

Bowler Overs Runs Wkts Econ
Arshdeep Singh 4 19 3 4.75
Varun Chakaravarthy 4 16 1 4
Jasprit Bumrah 4 26 1 6.5
Axar Patel 4 27 1 6.75
Abhishek Sharma 1 8 0 8
Nitish Kumar Reddy 2 30 0 15
Shivam Dube 1 21 0 21

Washington Sundar was in the squad and not in the XI. Iyer said as much at the toss, grouping him with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among the players left out. If the fifth-bowler job is the worry, Sundar is the bowler who was already on the bench while Reddy went at 15 and Dube at 21, the last of those in the 20th over. Bishnoi is the other unused specialist if Chakaravarthy’s four overs need a like-for-like wrist-spin fill.

Samson Keeps the Shirt After 10 off 8

The batting card will travel. Abhishek Sharma made 82 off 32, with seven fours and seven sixes, strike rate 256.25, and took player of the match after a 121-run stand with Ishan Kishan. Kishan, who had a minor back scare at training, hit 42 off 33 with five fours and a six. India closed on 157 for 3 in 13.4 overs, 38 balls spare, after Afghanistan’s 156 for 8.

Sanju Samson did not. He was caught at deep square off Azmatullah Omarzai for 10 off 8, two early fours then a miss-hit, and India were 18 for 1 in the third over. He had 33 runs in four innings coming into this series. The Kerala keeper was a central piece of the T20 World Cup side; the shirt on Sunday was a vote for that history over Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old who opened with Abhishek in Zimbabwe when Samson was rested.

Sooryavanshi stayed on the bench. Iyer chose experience in a series India are using as match practice, and Abhishek’s innings buried the chase so completely that Samson’s dismissal never became a match problem. It remains a selection problem. The teenager is in both 15s for a reason, and two more Delhi nights are the last public innings before the squad flies.

Delhi Is Afghanistan’s Home Ground This Series

The scorecard lists Afghanistan as the home side at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The ACB and BCCI confirmed in August that Afghanistan will host India in Delhi as part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Program, with all three matches at the same ground on September 13, 15 and 17. ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf called that arrangement a milestone, not a workaround.

Hosting India for a bilateral series in India is a significant milestone for us, and we highly value the cooperation and support of the BCCI in making this event possible.

Mirwais Ashraf, ACB chairman, BCCI series announcement

On the field, the home side still had to bat first after Iyer won the toss, and the top order lasted into the seventh over at 43 for 5. Rahmanullah Gurbaz edged Bumrah’s third legal ball for 0 off 2, after Bumrah’s first delivery of the night had gone for five wides. Ibrahim Zadran was run out for 11. Omarzai’s unbeaten 64 off 44 and Mohammad Nabi’s 33 off 27 added 83 and got Afghanistan to a total. It was never a total that asked India a question.

Zadran said the middle overs were better than the start, and that his side still did not put up the runs it wanted. “We had a good start, then we didn’t contribute well. We gave them back-to-back wickets, and they put pressure on us,” he said. Rashid Khan bowled 3.4 overs for 34 without a wicket. Fazalhaq Farooqi’s two overs went for 38. If Afghanistan are going to force a decider on Thursday, the first six overs have to look different from 41 for 4.

What Tuesday Changes Before Japan

A win on Tuesday gives India an unassailable 2-0 lead and turns Thursday into extra practice. A defeat keeps the series alive and would be Afghanistan’s first real return for the ranking points and match fees this Delhi staging is built to deliver. For Iyer the XI is the more expensive choice, because this 15 is also the Japan 15.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The series score: India lead 1-0 after chasing 157 for 3 in 13.4 overs on September 13.
  • The next night: The 2nd T20I is at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on September 15, 7:30 p.m. IST.
  • The spin vacancy: Chakaravarthy will play no further part in the series after the side strain.
  • The Japan 15: Hardik Pandya is not in it; Yash Thakur is, in place of Harshit Rana.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Asian Games fitness: A BCCI source said Chakaravarthy looks unlikely for Japan; the board has not issued a formal replacement.
  • Tuesday’s XI: Iyer has not named whether Bishnoi, Sundar or Sooryavanshi come in.
  • The fifth-bowler job: Reddy and Dube remain the batting-all-rounder options unless Sundar plays.

Chakaravarthy’s own advice to Afghanistan, given before the scan, was not to bowl spin at this batting group. Abhishek took Nabi for the bulk of a 32-ball 82 and India scored at 11.48 an over. If Iyer wants a genuine look at the fifth-bowler over, he has to lose a specialist or drop a batter. Sunday never forced that trade.

India’s Men Enter the Games at the Quarterfinals

Men’s cricket at the Aichi-Nagoya Games runs from September 24 to October 3 at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh skip the groups and start in the quarterfinals. India’s men are the defending champions in both cricket events from Hangzhou 2023, when the men’s gold medal match against Afghanistan was washed out and India took gold on seeding. Afghanistan have three straight silvers.

Before the groups even start, India play a T20I against Japan at Sano Cricket Ground on September 22. That is five days after the Delhi series ends. The men’s quarterfinal is on September 28 against the Group A runner-up, with the gold medal match on October 3. Group A is Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal, so the side India meet in the last eight will have had three games on the Nisshin hybrid pitch. India’s men will have had, at most, Sano and whatever they squeeze out of these Delhi nights.

THE ROAD AFTER DELHI

  1. September 15: 2nd T20I, Arun Jaitley Stadium, 7:30 p.m. IST.
  2. September 17: 3rd T20I, same ground, series already live or already won.
  3. September 22: India play Japan in a T20I at Sano Cricket Ground.
  4. September 24: Men’s Asian Games groups begin at Nisshin; India have a bye.
  5. September 28: India’s men open in the quarterfinals against the Group A runner-up.
  6. October 3: Gold medal match, if they get there.

Arshdeep’s 3 for 19, 16 dots in 24 balls, is the new-ball standard Iyer can already take on that trip. Bumrah’s four overs for 26 and a wicket, after a left-knee layoff, is the other. The unfinished work is the over that is not theirs.

Iyer Still Has Two Public XIs to Name

Iyer called Bumrah “a luxury to have” in the squad at the toss and said Sooryavanshi was not playing, “neither are Washington and two more.” He then watched Abhishek finish the game so fast that Tilak Varma walked out at 152 for 3 and scored 3 not out. The luxury on Tuesday is a second look, not a free hit. India’s Asian Games cricket squad is this group, with Tilak as vice-captain, and the bowling list is already a man down.

THE CALLS STILL OPEN

  • Wrist spin: Bishnoi for Chakaravarthy is the straight swap if Iyer wants four specialist overs of mystery pace off the pitch.
  • The fifth bowler: Sundar bowls those overs as a job. Reddy and Dube bowl them as a sideline, and Sunday priced that sideline at 51 runs in three overs between them.
  • The other opener: Samson has the shirt after 10 off 8. Sooryavanshi has the rest of the series as a live alternative, and Japan after that.
  • The new-ball spare: Yash Thakur, four wickets in two T20Is on debut in Zimbabwe, is the pace cover if Iyer wants a look at the man already named for Nisshin.

Afghanistan have to bat through the first six overs this time, or Tuesday becomes another 13-over chase. India can still win that kind of night without solving anything. They cannot take that version of the XI to Nisshin and pretend the fifth over will bowl itself.
