Square Enix Closes PlayStation’s Double State of Play Night

PlayStation splits September 3 into two State of Play streams, starting at 6:00 a.m. PT, and closes the English hour on Final Fantasy VII Revelation. The only named game is Square Enix’s. The only named host is on the second show.

That is the night Sony actually booked. Wish lists still pile first-party names onto an hour the company has not filled in public, while the Japan and Asia slate gets its own Japanese-language program right after, two weeks before Tokyo Game Show.

Sony Booked Two Shows and Moved the Clock

Sachie Kobari of PlayStation.Blog Japan posted the plan on August 31: two broadcasts airing back-to-back, beginning at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. BST / 3:00 p.m. CEST / 10:00 p.m. JST on YouTube and Twitch. The first hour is in English with Japanese subtitles. The second is in Japanese with English subtitles.

State of Play usually lands around 2:00 p.m. PT. This one starts eight hours earlier so the Japan follow-up can air at 10:00 p.m. in Tokyo. Sony has not given a runtime. Recent shows of this type have run about 40 minutes each.

These are the second and third State of Play broadcasts of 2026. June’s show opened on Marvel’s Wolverine and gave Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Laufey its first long look. September’s English hour is billed as “updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners,” then an extended look at “the vast world” of Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

Under that notice, the sharpest public argument was not a trailer request. It was a physical-copy protest. The lineup fight can wait until the stream names a second game. The disc fight was already queued.

THE TWO SHOWS ON SEPTEMBER 3

Kaji, the Attack on Titan voice actor who also hosted the November 2025 Japan hour, is the only person Sony attached to either broadcast by name. Square Enix is the only publisher attached to a title.

Wolverine Is 12 Days Out, Laufey Is February

Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine has a September 15 launch on PlayStation 5, 12 days after the stream. The store page already sells Standard and Digital Deluxe editions, lists a limited hardware bundle for that date, and treats the game as a single-player action adventure built for PS5, not an open world. A launch trailer would be advertising, not a reveal.

God of War Laufey has a February 16, 2027 date on PS5. Santa Monica Studio first showed it on June 2. Players control Faye, Kratos’s wife, in the Everywhen after her death, with Deborah Ann Woll in the role and Cory Barlog still over the creative side. Pre-orders, the official FAQ says, will open closer to release. Another combat slice would be useful. It would not change the calendar.

Naughty Dog posted on August 31 that the “very ambitious” cinematic shoot for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was a wrap, with Tati Gabrielle in the lead as bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun. The studio’s own line was that it cannot wait to show the cast’s work “when the time is right.” That is a delay phrase, not a Thursday booking.

PLAYSTATION STUDIOS DATES FROM HERE

1. June 2, 2026: God of War Laufey gets its first look; Marvel’s Wolverine is already the other face of that State of Play.
2. August 31, 2026: Sony posts the double-stream plan the same day Naughty Dog wraps Intergalactic capture.
3. September 3, 2026: State of Play and State of Play Japan run back-to-back.
4. September 15, 2026: Marvel’s Wolverine ships on PS5.
5. October 1, 2026: Ghost of Yotei’s Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion and a new roguelike mode land.
6. October 28, 2026: Phantom Blade Zero, which already had its own State of Play, is due.
7. February 16, 2027: God of War Laufey launches on PS5.

First-party is not empty. It is dated. A September showcase that needs a surprise has to find it outside that list, or settle for trailers of games people can already pre-order.

Square Enix Takes the English Closer on a Multiplatform Game

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third part of Square Enix’s remake project, due for a simultaneous Spring 2027 launch on four platforms: PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The original game’s 30th anniversary year is 2027. Sony is ending its English-language hour on a title that will not be a PlayStation exclusive.

Naoki Hamaguchi, the game’s director, spent September 1 with Asian press in Tokyo on a playable build. He said North American media would get the same hands-on at PAX the following week, with written previews then going out in every region at once. The State of Play slot sits in front of that press tour, not after it.

While you wait for those impressions, I hope you’ll enjoy the State of Play on September 3. I truly believe you won’t regret watching it live.

The official Final Fantasy VII account put the closer in one line: the stream “concludes with an extended look at the vast world” of Revelation. Sony’s own post used the same phrase. Nobody has promised a day-and-date, a runtime, or a new combat system in that segment. The promise is scale, on a game whose open-world pitch already includes the Highwind and parachute drops across the planet.

Putting that look in the English hour, rather than in State of Play Japan, is a distribution choice. Square Enix gets the global closer. The Japan-language show still has a full slate to fill without burning the biggest trailer on a Japanese-only audience.

What State of Play Japan Showed Last November

State of Play Japan is not a new format. The last one ran on November 11, 2025, for about 40 minutes, and the official November 2025 recap of the Japan hour reads like a trailer farm: release dates, DLC, betas, and remakes, not a single PlayStation Studios tentpole.

HOW THAT HOUR WAS USED

• Dragon Quest VII Reimagined: Square Enix brought a follow-up trailer and a February 5, 2026 date.
• Fatal Frame II remake: Koei Tecmo set March 12, 2026, with series director Makoto Shibata on camera.
• Elden Ring Nightreign DLC: FromSoftware dated The Forsaken Hollows for December 4, 2025, with two new Nightfarers.
• Marvel Tokon beta: Arc System Works added Spider-Man and Ghost Rider for a December 5, 2025 closed beta.
• Gran Turismo 7 add-on: Kazunori Yamauchi dated the Power Pack, with endurance racing, for December 4, 2025.

That mix is the template. If September’s Japan hour looks like November’s, expect dated partner software, not a Santa Monica or Naughty Dog surprise with Japanese subtitles. Kaji’s job is to walk a long list. The English hour’s job, on paper, is shorter and heavier.

The First Hour Still Has Room for Partners

Sony has named one game for the opening broadcast and left the rest blank. The blank is being filled, in public, with Last of Us Part III and Uncharted 5, two titles the company has not put on this show. Intergalactic is the cleaner first-party question, and the studio that would have to answer it already pointed at a later date.

A Wolverine spot is the easy booking because the game is 12 days from sale. Ghost of Yotei’s October 1 expansion is the other obvious PlayStation Studios clip. Phantom Blade Zero, due October 28, already had a dedicated State of Play and still fits a short reminder. Housemarque shipped Saros in April; a post-launch mode would rhyme with Returnal’s afterlife, not with a new IP dump.

Third parties have more oxygen. Konami’s Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse and Saber’s John Wick game were surprises earlier in the year. Control Resonant and Star Wars: Galactic Racer are close enough to need another look. None of those names is on Sony’s September 3 post.

WHAT WE KNOW

• The closer: Final Fantasy VII Revelation ends the English hour with an extended world look.
• The second show: State of Play Japan follows at once, hosted by Yuki Kaji, in Japanese with English subtitles.
• The first-party lock: Wolverine is dated September 15, 2026; Laufey is dated February 16, 2027.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

• Any other title: Sony has not listed a second game for either broadcast.
• Runtimes: Neither show has a published length.
• Intergalactic: Capture is done; a Thursday gameplay drop is still a guess.

Hamaguchi’s PAX plan is the one scheduled fact that sits after the stream. Asian press already played Revelation in Tokyo. North American press plays it after September 3. The broadcast is the commercial that has to travel before those articles land together.

Tokyo Game Show Opens 14 Days After the Stream

Tokyo Game Show 2026 runs September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe, the first time the show stretches to five days, with business sessions on the 17th and 18th and public days through the 21st. Sony’s double stream sits 14 days in front of that gate.

September State of Play has long been the TGS-adjacent slot. Last year’s English show used it to put Wolverine back on stage and to date Housemarque’s Saros. This year’s version splits the slot in two and hands the named closer to a multiplatform Square Enix game whose own director is already running a two-continent preview tour.

Watch both from 6:00 a.m. PT if the English hour is the assignment. Stay for Kaji if the question is what Japan and Asia still have left to date before the Makuhari floor opens. The one title Sony was willing to print in advance is the one that ends the first show, and it does not belong to PlayStation Studios.
