Diablo 5 Takes the Sequel Path Diablo 4 Could Not Hold
Blizzard is building Diablo 5 for Spring 2029 after directors said a Diablo 4 expansion could not hold the Lord of Terror.
Diablo 5 is a new numbered game because its systems would not fit inside a Diablo 4 expansion, Blizzard’s production leads said. Tiffany Wat, production director, and Matt Zitterman, executive producer, said at BlizzCon that the next hunt needed deep changes to how the game works, and that an add-on was the wrong box for them.
Blizzard, which brands the sequel Diablo V, set a spring 2029 window when it revealed the project at the opening ceremony on September 12, 2026. Diablo 4 will keep getting seasons. It will not get another expansion.
The Sequel Exists Because Diablo 4 Cannot Be Rewritten
Zitterman said the choice did not start with a product label. It started with players. “It really started by looking at who our players are,” he said. “Who are Diablo players? Why are they playing Diablo? What do they want out of a Diablo game?”
That work, he said, came before the expansion-or-sequel question, and it included what still works in Diablo 4 and where the live game leaves room to improve. Once the ambition hardened, the team decided it needed changes that are hard to make on top of a game that has already been live for years.
And to do that in an expansion just didn’t feel right. We needed to give him his own game.
Matt Zitterman, executive producer, at BlizzCon
The “him” is Diablo. Zitterman said the Lord of Terror is the main villain they want to put at the centre of a full story, on the scale of the Lilith and Mephisto arc that Diablo 4 just finished. Wat added a franchise rhyme: Diablo 2 sat 100 years after Diablo 1, and a gap of that size is what lets them stage Diablo’s return and his conquest of Sanctuary.
Announcing this early is part of the bet. Zitterman said that if the studio had waited until the game was much further along, player notes would be harder to use. Regular development updates are planned starting in 2027.
What the Team Could Not Bolt Onto an Expansion
A sequel, in this telling, is a license to change fundamentals. An expansion has to keep faith with characters, towns, loot rules, and a map that millions of people already own. Diablo 5 is being built as if those debts do not apply.
CHANGES THAT WOULD NOT FIT AN ADD-ON
- The map: Diablo 5 brings procedural layout back to the overworld as well as the dungeons, so a path you learned yesterday may not be there when you return.
- The towns: Wat said there are no more towns, because Diablo and his Dread Commanders have destroyed Sanctuary’s safe rooms.
- The camp: You move with a caravan of survivors you pick up on the road, region to region, instead of parking in a hub.
- The classes: The team is promising more classes than any prior Diablo game, and it has already shown three of them.
- The villain’s win: You do not stop the apocalypse. You walk into a world where Diablo already sits on the throne of Westmarch.
Those are not season themes. They are the kind of reset that would strand a Diablo 4 character, a stash, and a cosmetic closet. That is why the new hunt is a new SKU.
Game director Joe Shely put the premise in one line at the ceremony: the heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won. Wat’s question for the player is the same one on the teaser. What must you become when the world has already fallen?
Two Paid Expansions, Then Seasons Only
Diablo 4 launched on June 6, 2023, and it did get a proper expansion run. Vessel of Hatred shipped on October 8, 2024. Lord of Hatred began rolling out on April 27, 2026. That second pack closed the Hatred story around Mephisto. It is also, for now, the end of the expansion line.
Diablo game director Brent Gibson said after the reveal that the team is focused on Diablo 4 seasons and on getting to Diablo 5. He said they had told the story of Hatred, and that they are moving toward the story of Terror. On September 18 he went further, calling the end of the expansion plan liberating, because seasons can now follow a butterfly effect instead of another boxed campaign.
THE ROAD FROM DIABLO 4 TO DIABLO 5
| Release | Date | What players get |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo 4 | June 6, 2023 | Base game |
| Vessel of Hatred | October 8, 2024 | First expansion |
| Lord of Hatred | April 27, 2026 | Second expansion, last one planned |
| Amazon class pack | First half of 2027 | Paid class DLC, not an expansion |
| Diablo 5 | Spring 2029 | New numbered game |
The live title is not being switched off. Gibson has said support should last a very long time. The next named beat is still a Diablo 4 product: the Amazon, a class pack for the first half of 2027, with bow and javelin and four setups (Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander). She comes from Skovos, the island Lord of Hatred put on the map. She is not a third expansion.
That split is the quiet cost of the sequel. People who wanted another full campaign inside Diablo 4 are being asked to live on seasons until a new game, on a new character, in a new ruleset. The 2029 date makes that trade feel even longer, which is the objection that stuck after the teaser landed. A numbered sequel this far out also reads as the Diablo-sized expansion the current game will never receive.
Diablo Gets the Campaign the Last Game Withheld
Diablo 4’s base story belonged to Lilith. The expansions belonged to Mephisto. Diablo himself stayed in the wings. Wat and Zitterman are now saying that tacking him onto that live game as extra content would have been the small version of a large character.
The new campaign jumps 100 years after Diablo 4. Blizzard’s pitch is a Sanctuary that already lost. Diablo rules from Westmarch and uses its people and souls in the Eternal Conflict. You play the Heir to Westmarch, on the run, trying to take the kingdom back. Wat said that personal stake is the difference from the Wanderer, who could fight the Prime Evils without owning the land under them.
Shely has described the continent as an outpost of Hell, with few humans left who have not bowed or turned cultist, and with some of the strong raised as Dread Commanders. The campaign still has to be a Diablo loot hunt, which is why a sticky ambition on the team, as Zitterman has told it, is to beat the last game’s story without throwing away what D4 did well.
Holding both ideas at once is the awkward part. Diablo 4 is still the live service. Diablo 5 is the place the studio will allow itself to break the live service’s rules. The Lord of Terror is the excuse, and he is also the product.
A Caravan, No Towns, and a Map That Forgets You
Blizzard’s first details on classes and systems came in the Forging the Next Era panel, hosted with Blizzard president Johanna Faries. The recap is blunt about the ground under your feet. Sanctuary is no longer stable. Diablo reshapes it through terror, and the overworld is procedural, so terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when you come back.
Wat has used a harder version of that line in interviews: if you return to a region, the path you found, the landmark you walked toward, and the way you fought those elites will not help you today. That is a D2 dungeon feeling stretched across the whole map, and it is the opposite of Diablo 4’s learned, static overworld. It is also exactly the sort of change that would make a live expansion feel like a different game wearing the old client’s clothes.
The first three classes are a mix of old names and a new one. The Demon Hunter is back with twin crossbows, from the shadows, leaping in to finish prey. The Monk is back with fists and holy force. The new Plague Knight is the grotesque one: a heavily armored walker who spreads disease across a fight and then eats that disease for power. Shely called the class walking death. More classes are promised on the road to launch.
Loot is being pulled toward older Diablo habits, with a warning label still on the art. The panel talked about item depth, clarity, and identity, and it put gear sets back in the conversation. Early screens showed pieces that take more than one inventory square. That last point is already a fight among people who remember stash-grid pain. Shely has also said some of the denser systems will sit later in the endgame, so the campaign does not drown players who mainly want to walk the fallen world.
Seasons Keep Diablo 4 Alive Until 2029
Blizzard used the same show to argue that the franchise is busier than it has been in years. The opening recap said more than 130 million players worldwide have entered Sanctuary across 30 years of Diablo. That line sat beside the sequel teaser, a Netflix animated series in development, the Amazon pack, and Diablo 4’s arrival on Nintendo Switch 2.
HOW THE LIVE GAME CARRIES THE GAP
- September 12, 2026: BlizzCon opening ceremony reveals Diablo 5 for spring 2029 and frames a Sanctuary that has already fallen.
- September 15, 2026: Season of Hell’s Legacy begins rolling out at 9:30 a.m. PT, with Deckard Cain’s lost soul and a run at Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo; the Age of Hatred Collection lands on Switch 2 the same day.
- First half of 2027: The Amazon class pack is due in Diablo 4, while Diablo 5 is slated to start public development updates.
- Spring 2029: Diablo 5’s launch window, with platforms still unannounced.
Season of Hell’s Legacy is the 30th anniversary season, a tribute pass through old foes, places, and loot. Upcoming seasons, Blizzard said, keep following the dead-rising thread from Season of Death’s Awakening rather than opening a new boxed act. Gibson’s version is that the Hatred story is complete, and the next years are for smaller swings that can still point, loosely, at a Terror age 100 years later.
Wat and Zitterman are asking Diablo 4’s crowd to help shape a game they will not play for years, while the game they are playing loses the expansion cadence that used to mean a new region and a new campaign. The studio gets a clean sheet for procedural land, a caravan instead of towns, a wider class list, and a villain who has already won. Players get seasons, an Amazon in 2027, and a sequel date that will test whether “too big for an expansion” was a design truth or just the polite way to leave.
