World of Warcraft Forever Turns Classic Plus Into a New Game

World of Warcraft Forever launches November 4 as a level 60 time bubble with a paid Skyborne race, new dungeons, and systems Classic never had.

Blizzard will launch World of Warcraft Forever on November 4 as a third, level 60 branch of the MMO, with a paid new race inside a first-year setting. Holly Longdale, executive producer and vice president for World of Warcraft, unveiled it at BlizzCon on September 12 as “friendly, familiar, and new.”

Fans had called the idea Classic Plus for years. The shipping product keeps a level 60 ceiling, then adds more than 1,000 new quests, rebuilt classes, and elves that did not exist in 2004.

Blizzard Now Runs Three Versions of Azeroth

Forever is a separate branch that sits next to modern World of Warcraft and World of Warcraft Classic. Core play is included with an active subscription or game time, the same way Classic is. You still start at level 1. The cap stays at 60 for the foreseeable future.

The original game launched in 2004 and has since grown through 11 expansions. The live title is in Midnight, with an Eclipse update already on the calendar. Classic, announced in 2017 and shipped in 2019, has already moved through The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. A large slice of the audience wanted the first year of Azeroth to stop moving. Forever is Blizzard’s attempt to hold that year in place and still ship patches.

Longdale said the world is the main character, “a place dedicated to community and making sure it’s nurtured.” She also said the game should be “easy to get into and play, and deep enough to stay forever,” and that “There’s no rush here: It’s the journey that counts, not the destination.” The company posted the launch kit the same day.

That list is the pitch. The fine print is a shop pack for the new race, a beta that is not free, and new raids that do not open on November 4.

A Thousand Answers for Classic Plus

Senior game director Ion Hazzikostas told a BlizzCon audience that the story began nine years earlier in those halls, when the company announced WoW Classic. He thanked “dreamers” who kept the Classic Plus idea alive, and he said the team had spent a year watching arguments about what the project could be, should be, and should never be.

Season of Discovery was the dress rehearsal. That seasonal mode launched on November 30, 2023, and its last new phase, Scarlet Enclave, landed in April 2025. Hazzikostas said players from that test wanted a forever home after Season of Discovery, not another timed season. Forever is that home. It is also the place where Blizzard has to pick one design among years of forum demands.

What do they want out of a renewed, revitalized, expanded version of the original game? You would get a thousand different answers.

Ion Hazzikostas, Senior Game Director, BlizzCon 2026 interview

He said the hard part was gathering that feedback in secret, stacking it against six or seven years of Classic live data, and deciding how much change is too much. Season of Discovery, he said, pushed those limits on purpose so the team would know where the floor broke. Forever is the triangulation that followed: new zones and talents, no flying mounts, no level scaling, and a first-year story that sits after the new Warcraft III: Reforged campaign Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core.

Longdale put the same problem in art terms. If you build zones with a Classic feel, how close do you get to modern lighting, and how much do you keep of the 2004 look? Forever answers with upgraded world visuals and a new race whose models already read, to a lot of veteran eyes, like a current-era pass rather than a 2004 one.

The New Elves Cost Extra

The Skyborne are windswept elves from Zephras Isle, a floating starting zone for levels 1 to 12. They can join the Horde as Windshapers or the Alliance as the High Order. Shared classes are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid. Horde Skyborne can be Shamans. Alliance Skyborne can be Mages. Paladin, Priest, and Warlock are not on the Skyborne list at launch.

You cannot roll one on a plain subscription. Access to the Skyborne race and the Zephras Isle starting questline requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack from $29.99 or a higher edition on Battle.net. That is a first for a WoW race that is not tied to a numbered expansion.

THE THREE PRE-PURCHASE PACKS

Edition Price Skyborne and Zephras Beta access
Skyborne Heroic Pack $29.99 Yes No
Skyborne Epic Pack $59.99 Yes Yes, September 17 to October 21
Warcraft Forever Collection Limited top bundle Yes Yes, plus Warcraft III: Reforged and the Forsaken Kingdom campaign

Epic and Collection also add 30 days of game time at launch. Heroic includes one Invite-A-Friend launch code; the two higher packs include three. Name reservation for paying buyers runs October 27 through November 3, first come, first served. The Collection stays on sale through January 11, 2027. Housing decor in the packs is for modern WoW and needs Midnight. None of those cosmetics go into WoW Classic.

The rest of the new identity mix is in the base game. Official materials call out the Forsaken Paladin and the Dwarf Shaman. The BlizzCon combo list also adds Human Hunter, Gnome Priest, Troll Warlock, and Orc Mage.

NEW RACE AND CLASS COMBOS

  • Human Hunter: Alliance hunters are no longer locked off humans.
  • Gnome Priest: Gnomes pick up a healer and caster role they never had in 2004.
  • Dwarf Shaman: A Horde-coded class on an Alliance mountain race.
  • Troll Warlock: Another Horde caster path on a race that could not take it at launch.
  • Orc Mage: Orcs get a cloth caster instead of only the old martial and warlock mix.
  • Undead Paladin: Forsaken paladins are the headline break from original faction rules.

Every class also gets rebuilt talents and new spells. The trees still use the old three-tree shape, but the points and milestones are not a museum copy of patch 1.12.

Nine Dungeons Open Before Any New Raid

Blizzard’s Forever page names three new zones: Zephras Isle, Riverglades, and Mount Hyjal. Zephras is the Skyborne start. Riverglades is a mid-level Eastern Kingdoms frontier of rivers, trade roads, and old grudges, aimed at levels 35 to 45. Mount Hyjal is a level 60 endgame slope, set after Archimonde’s defeat, through Darkwhisper Gorge. Older zones are being overhauled rather than left as a screenshot of 2004.

Nine new dungeons are scheduled for launch day, spread across the whole 1-60 climb, which is the design answer to a Season of Discovery complaint: most of the new toys sat at the cap.

THE NINE LAUNCH DUNGEONS

Dungeon Level band
Hall of Thanes 13-18
Ruins of Lordaeron 15-20
Excavation Site 24-29
City of Dalaran 28-33
The Drowned City 35-40
Krol’Dok Stronghold 40-45
Alcaz Island Prison 48-53
Blackmaw Hold 55-60
Shaper’s Terrace 58-60

The two new max-level raids wait. The BlizzCon roadmap puts 10-player Barrow Deeps and 20-player Hyjal Summit on December 9, with Onyxia’s Lair returning as a 40-player raid the same day. Classic vanilla raids are in the world but are not the first endgame beat. Spring 2027 is slated for two more raids, two more dungeons, a legendary questline, and a PvP refresh. Summer 2027 lists a revamped iconic raid and another new one.

PvP gets Darkspear Islands, a 15 versus 15 battleground off Kalimdor that plays closest to Eye of the Storm, with capture points you have to hold. The old battlegrounds return with it.

Rulesets Replace the Old Server List

Forever drops the old “pick a realm and hope your friends are on it” habit. At the BlizzCon panel, developers described rulesets instead of a server browser: you choose how you want to play, then the game puts you with other people on that ruleset so the roads are not empty. Hardcore is on the plan for winter 2026, after launch, rather than as a day-one toggle.

Several other systems would have been patch notes from a later decade. Transmog exists, and it is optional; you can turn it off and see other people in the models they actually equipped. A Legacy track hands out account-wide, non-combat perks for exploring, leveling extra classes, raising tradeskills, climbing PvP ranks, maxing reputations, and finishing dungeons and raids. Camping lets players drop a campsite in the open world so crafters can hang buffs on anyone who stops there.

The quality-of-life fight that will not die is the map. Forever can show quest objective locations. The toggle can be switched off, but a group with the dots on will still path to the circles while the person who wanted to read the text and ask in /say is along for the ride. That is the smallest change on the slide and the one that most cleanly breaks the 2004 social loop.

Luckyone, a long-time WoW interface developer, said Forever is being built on patch 12.1.5, with the modern secret and aura-container tools, and that future retail UI limits are expected to land here too. If that holds in the beta client, the “Classic Plus” client is a current-era branch wearing first-year content, not a frozen 1.12 executable with extra zones glued on.

When the Beta Opens, and What It Costs

The beta starts September 17 and runs through October 21. Guaranteed access is a pack benefit on Skyborne Epic and the Warcraft Forever Collection. Blizzard also left an opt-in form on the Forever page for a chance at a test key. Community guides say the test cap is level 30, which would keep raid theorycraft off the public beta, though dungeon routes and leveling paths will still be mapped in public.

A public test with streamers in it means the efficient routes, talent pages, and “skip this quest” lists will exist before November 4. That is useful for a new-player on-ramp. It is also the opposite of the lost weekend a lot of Classic Plus petitions were trying to buy back.

THE ROAD TO NOVEMBER 4

  1. September 12, 2026: Longdale unveils World of Warcraft Forever at BlizzCon in Anaheim; the game is playable on the show floor.
  2. September 17, 2026: Paid beta opens for Epic Pack and Collection buyers, through October 21.
  3. October 20, 2026: Invite-A-Friend launch codes begin going out by email.
  4. October 27, 2026: Early name reservation opens for pack buyers, through November 3.
  5. November 4, 2026: Forever launches at 3 p.m. Pacific; invitees can play through November 11.
  6. December 9, 2026: Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and 40-player Onyxia’s Lair open.

Longdale’s advice for people who have never played WoW is to start here, because everyone else will be new on the same day and moving at the same pace. Hazzikostas noted that a Forever player can still log into modern Azeroth on the same subscription and level well into the current game without buying Midnight, then decide which branch to keep.

Private Servers Already Lived This Fantasy

Unofficial Classic-plus realms spent years adding races, zones, and raids on a vanilla chassis while Blizzard’s own Classic track kept marching into later expansions. Forever now sells that promise in the Battle.net shop, with legal servers, a support team, and a content roadmap into 2027. The people who wanted an official home for that scene get it. The people who wanted an untouched 2004 client with a few extra dungeons get a different product that still uses the Classic Plus nickname in every recap.

Classic Era remains the frozen original, so nobody is deleting the museum. Forever is the museum that keeps building new wings, then charging $29.99 if you want to enter through the new elf gate. Winter Hardcore, spring raids, and a summer “iconic” redo will decide whether the year-one bubble can take years of patches without turning into a fourth retail.

The beta still opens September 17 for Epic and Collection buyers. Launch is November 4 at 3 p.m. Pacific. The first new raids wait until December 9.
